EGR valve nut

the front 12mm nut that holds the EGR valve must've been welded onto the stud at the factory. I can't get it off. Neither have other folks. I have found multiple references for this problem on 7th gen civics on tube videos and other honda forums. Short of going all gorilla on this thing and ripping everything apart and pulling the stud any other suggestions? I have soaked it in PB and liquid wrench, I have used an impact, I have yelled at it, and i even tried to make a deal with it but still no budging. It has never been off and am sure the valve filthy I'd really like to clean it especially since I have already cleaned out the EGR passages on the intake manifold. I do not have P0401 or P0404 codes. Just doing some preventive maintenance.

Re: EGR valve nut

...It is not welded, that's for sure, mine came right off with the right tools. If you could get an impact on it it should have come off.

I used a 1/4 inch socket and a long 1/4 inch extension, if memory serves.

I don't think I was able to get a 1/4 inch elbow in there. ...but I might have used that as well.

Re: EGR valve nut

I wouldn't touch the EGR valve until it's actually a problem.

Cleaning the valve is not necessary and not productive IMO.

The clogs occur at the intake manifold areas, not at the EGR valve.

wow, thats what Im talking about. that thing is on there., I really don't feel like breaking the stud free and risk damaging everything so I will follow Ezone's advice and use common sense and just leave it alone for now. At one point it wont be able to open properly (lift) and I will get code P0404.

Re: EGR valve nut

*UPDATE*According to Eric at South Main Auto (check out his you tube channel if you haven't already) Kroil is the best penetrating oil out there. I remembered this and bought a can of it. And wow, I tried to get this nut off before with PB, WD40, liquid wrench and nothing would make it budge even with an impact. I was afraid I would have to pull out the stud. I used some Kroil spray on it today, sprayed it twice over a 4 hour period and it came right off. I cleaned the egr valve and replaced the cam plug seal.
its a little pricey but it works.
here it is at amazon

I've heard this super cheap DIY penetrating oil = Acetone + ATF, mixed 50/50

I keep some of this mixed on my workbench in a plastic squeeze bottle, can apply with a plastic eyedropper thingy......but IMO the spray cans of cheap crap that only kind of works are so much handier and easier to use LOL

In the land of rust, penetrating oils don't work fast enough....Fire can be my best friend.

Re: EGR valve nut

I worked as a mechanic in a nuclear power plant on an aircraft carrier for 4.5 years. We always had ample amounts of kroil on hand. I've just been too lazy to buy some of my own. lol
