Noisy Belt

Hey all,
I have a 2005 Value-Package Special Edition, 1.7 SOHC that has been making a lot of belt noise lately. It only really happens at idle, like if I'm sitting in a drive-thru or at a light for a long time. When I'm driving along it's silent. Sometimes if it gets really noisy I can put it in neutral or turn the A/C on and it quiets down for a while.

I've been reading through the forums and I think the belt is just loose and sliding across the pulley instead of spinning it.

I'm wondering if someone could provide a video or explanation on how to tighten up the belt.

Thanks,

There's a thread in this forum with a title something like 'looking for a free service manual?'.. Search and check that thread. Last page will have the most recent links.

Re: Noisy Belt

I literally just asked the same thing couple days ago. Mine is also a 2005 Civic VP.

It makes the noise only during cold start (not been driven for >3-5 hours) when AC/Fan is turned on. It's a high pitch noise that can definitely draw attention. It only makes the noise when the vehicle is idle, accelerating from 0, or moving at low-speed (30 miles on interstate) they said there are no problem at all (obviously since the noise will not come up after driving) and charged me 110 for re-tension belts. They said I can try to drop off the car and leave it with them for a day or two.

I have scheduled an appointment with mechanic to replace accessory belt and alternator belt on Tuesday. Hopefully that will solve the problem.

Re: Noisy Belt

My 2005 CR-V at around 95,000 started making belt noise. You could watch it sort-of jump (with a tad of noise) as it set there at idle with load on it..(AC probably)
Close inspection on car looked good. Finally just pulled it off and replaced it. It looks good (thru it in the boot just in case) but I am sure just like a chain, it has a little uneven wear. So little, you can hardly see it...

Throw some talcum power on it while running to make sure it's not something else. If it happens to be some oil or something like that, talcum will fix that after a few times of dusting it. Don't breath talcum..they say it will kill you after years of dusting baby bottoms no less..
