Brakes pop after drum replacement

I just finished replacing my shoes and drums on the rear of my 2001 Civic EX coupe. After I finished I bled the whole system for good measure. I took it on a test drive and everything worked great, just when I was pulling into my gravel driveway I ran over a small rock and heard a loud pop in the drivers rear. Now when I brake the drivers rear makes pop/tick in time with the wheel speed (sounds like once per rotation) under braking. I took the drum back off and everything looks fine inside and I don't see any signs of rubbing. The only part that moves rotationally is the drum and the spline on the very inside (wheel speed sensor?) and I don't see anything near the splines that would cause it to bind. Does anyone have any ideas where I went wrong? The other wheel works fine. The problem wheel spins freely for 1-2 rotations and stops just like it should.

Were the brakes adjusted properly? Did you spin the wheels freely and hit the brakes a few times while the car was on the stands? One of the reasons I replaced my drums with discs is because drums are a pain in the *** to change.

Yes I did. I think I just solved the problem. I pulled it and tried to readjust it again and the new drum unseats itself just slightly after a few spins. It may be bad out of the box. A warp could explain why it was popping with each rotation. I swapped the old drum back on, drove it around for a little bit and it seems to be fine.

I also read over on a Toyota forum that it could be the retaining clips. I pulled the new ones and sure enough in their unsprung state they were not as open as the old ones which could have caused the shoes to bang around under braking. I opened them up with some pliers and reinstalled. They may have helped it too. I wasn't scientific enough to try and test one thing at a time. I'll see if this fix holds for a week. If it does, I'll return the new drum assuming that was the culprit and replace it.

Nice, it's always good to have a plan! If you'd like, you should post your ultimate solution back here so that others with similar problems can see what you did!

If there wasn't anything wrong with the original drums, I'd put them both back on the car and return the new ones.
