01 Won't Shift
01 Won't Shift
I have a 2001 Civic with 82,000 on it. Yesterday it was very cold out (0 degrees) so I let it warm up 15 minute prior to driving. Worked perfectly normal the first drive. I parked it for about 2 hours and then let it heat up again for ~10 minutes prior to leaving and this time it was fine until 4 miles into the drive it stopped wanting to go faster than 20-25 mph. It was a struggle to get it home. Alas, I was rounding the corner home and noticed the check engine light on. I parked at home and tried to use my car later. It would not shift into drive in any of D, D3, or 2. It does not move forward. Reverse does work very weakly if I get the rpms over 3,000.
Checked transmission fluid, looks nice and red and was at the appropriate level. Where do I go from here?

Trying to assess if this is an engine performance problem, or if it crapped the transmission. Sounds more like the trans.
Re: 01 Won't Shift
Engine sounds as normal as I can tell.
It will rev over 3000. I only tried up to 5000 and when I tried this in drive the car either slowly tried to inch forward, or shook. (not entirely sure).
Yes, engine oil is at the correct level, and is still somewhat the clean yellow-ish color due to having an oil change just before winter.
Do you need the special computer or is there a way to get these otherwise?

Re: 01 Won't Shift
Many parts stores will read codes for free.....but it's gonna be hard for you to drive there like this.
If you look around, you can get a very basic code reader for like $20, maybe even less.
But info from that may be fruitless if it comes down to needing a transmission job.
3000 RPM and it would only creep in reverse..... No horrible noises?
I still have a feeling it's gonna need a trans job.
