Knocking from AC pulley
Knocking from AC pulley
02 Civic LX Coupe
When my engine has warmed up, I have been getting a loud knocking noise from the AC pulley during idle. It comes and goes and isn't consistent. When the engine is revved (over 2,000 rpm's roughly) the knocking goes away and sounds smooth. Also, if i turn on the AC the noise goes away instantly and the pulley is smooth. When it is knocking i can see that the pulley has a slight wobble to it causing the noise. I'm up to 230,000 miles and i'm looking for the easiest fix. Not sure if replacing the bearings and pulley is possible or if i'm looking at a new AC Compressor because of maybe a clutch issue or just bypassing the AC altogether with a smaller belt. Any feedback would be appreciated! Thanks!

Re: Knocking from AC pulley
Your description sounds to me like the pulley bearing is bad.

Honda will sell the pulley and clutch set (part #4 above), and the coil (part #10 above), separately from the compressor.
I'd keep the original compressor and just replace the pulley and clutch set.
I wouldn't want an aftermarket reman compressor.

Re: Knocking from AC pulley
You can probably replace the parts without discharging freon, if you are careful and have good tools.
You have to check and adjust clearance between the pulley and outer clutch hub using the little shims. 0.50mm +/- 0.15mm is the spec.
