how to bypass pressure switch
how to bypass pressure switch
Hey all...
I got my son a 2004 Honda Civic base model. I only paid $400 bucks! It has a 1.7L non vtec motor with 245,000 miles. So, I just got a JDM vtev 1.7L to put in it for him. Old motor is out and new is ready to go in. Both motors are D17A's. I got a new ECU for the vtec motor. The vtec solenoid on this JDM doesn't have the pressure switch. So, I only have one green wire. From reading other posts and other forums, I know I need to switch some wires at wire harness so this reads proper to the new ECU. All the posts I can find, only shows for other motors, and not the D17A. Please help. Thanks!!

D17A what? Plain? 1? 2?
D17A could have been used in Canadian models.
I'm used to seeing these:
D17A1 in US, non-VTEC
D17A2 in US, VTEC
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Honda_D_engine#D17A
If you got the JDM(?) ECM that matches the engine (that uses no pressure switch on the VTEC), you should only need to run new wire to operate the solenoid. (Assuming you are reusing the original engine wiring harness.)
If you got a USDM ECM that will be looking for the pressure switch signal from the nonexistent switch, you might need to buy a VTEC valve for a US D17A2 engine and run all the wires for it.

Re: how to bypass pressure switch
Its a JDM so I think its a D17A2 ... I got the harness and ecu with that motor but I don't think I can use it. When I hook up the vtec ecu I got the car turns over but will not start. When I hook up the ecu the car game with, it starts and runs great. Just no vtec. I heard I had to use the vtec ecu and change some pin placements in the harness .... I just don't know tho...

Ah. Look for the blinking green key symbol when trying to start with the JDM ECM. It isn't programmed for the immobilizer chip keys you have, therefore no run.
Plug in and check this wildass guess?
Your original ECM is still able to run the engine because it still knows the chip key (immobilizer) info.
How's that answer?

Re: how to bypass pressure switch
Found a pic of a VTEC valve sans pressure switch here

Looks like you could remove the plug (bolt) and screw in the correct pressure switch and seal there IF needed and run wires if needed.
If you use the ECM and harness that came with the new engine, you shouldn't need to alter this because the ECM doesn't need the pressure switch.
