2001 Civic Idle issue

Hi Everybody Happy New Year,

Took the oportunity of the long holiday to put the car in the shop for a trans rebuild for the dreaded P0740 code. I saw the parts and the filter was slam caked with sludge and the discs were starting to come apart. Could peel them with your finger nails. Suprised it worked as well as it did. While I had in in the shop I had them do a few other things I was going to do but figured to just go ahead and get it done.

One of the additional items was to find an oil leak. They said the VTEC solenoid was leaking. They replaced two gaskets and so far so good. They want me to drive it for a week or two and then bring it back to check the tranny job and the VTEC solenoid for any leaks.

Before I had the car worked on, I was really pleased with how it ran. Even got compliments from others. At a light you would have to look at the Tach to even tell if it was running. Anyway, now at idle there is a vibration. Doesn't matter if in gear or at idle. I can't tell if it is some sort of miss or if it is trans related. The shop said they will take care of it when I bring it back. There are no codes just the change in how it idles. Highway seems fine. I suspect something in the VTEC solenoid. Any ideas of what they may have disturbed?

Re: 2001 Civic Idle issue

I forgot to add that they accidently broke a wire on the downstream O2 sensor and it threw a code for the heater circuit for that sensor. They put in a new sensor at no charge. I know the downstream sensor really has no effect on engine operation but I thought if they cleared the system the engine would have to re calibrate itself. Enough time has gone by for that and the slightly rough idle is still there. The idle is not too bad but it is not the way it was so I am trying to figure it out.

Re: 2001 Civic Idle issue

Not an engine running issue, but a vibration issue?
Why not let the shop worry about it, like they told you?

VTEC items have nothing to do with it.

Do an idle relearn first.
Then have the shop neutralize the mounts---Check this link: https://www.civicforums.com/forums/posts/36-mechanical-problems-vehicle-issues-fix-forum/358222-2003-honda-civic-gx-heavy-vibration-idle/4654914-post7.html

Ezone,

You amaze me. I think you nailed it. I did some more searching of the forum and found posts about aftermarket motor mounts. I mentioned in my original posts that I had them do some other work while they had it. They called me and said I had a broken engine mount (not sure which one, I will fing out). I also had them change the lower control arm bushings which I already knew were bad. I will take that "Learn Procedure" with me when I take it back in case they are not aware of it. That decribes my problem exactly. I hope that is all it is. Thanks again.

I also want to appologize to everyone for not searching for my answer before asking for help. I will try and do better.

Re: 2001 Civic Idle issue

You may as well just have them throw away their aftermarket motor mount(s) right now and get you factory parts.

THEN do the neutralization procedure.

I've been on those wild goose chases before.
You wouldn't believe how many people complain about mysterious annoying vibrations after someone installs aftermarket mounts....but they don't tell us what was done, and expect us to figure it out in 3 minutes flat....
NOBODY tells us what was replaced or when the issue started without serious prying.
Doesn't matter which car either.

Donkey *****. Suck, they do.
