If it's due for a trans fluid service, then it makes sense to drain the fluid.
There are other reasons to drain it too....... All good and valid, I'm sure.
Always follow the service manual, without question!!!

(Was that too much?)

Real world: I don't normally drain a trans just to pull an axle out. If it drips, dribbles, drains, or pours fluid while apart, I can clean it up after the job is done and refill the trans as needed..
You DID make sure your trans is full, right?
Now if the trans is going to come out, then yes I'd drain it so I don't get soaked in the middle of wrestling the trans out of the car.
An unintended shower of ATF sucks, and gear lube sucks worse.

If your trans is filled properly the fluid does drip/drain from the passenger side. I know this from personal experience. It won't do that on the driver side if you remove the axle.

Mine stay level, and I can walk under them.

If there is no dribble from one side, there won't be a dribble on the other.

Re: just replaced axle, 01 civic ex
I had the car jacked up on the passenger side to replace the lower control arm(compliance bushing torn) and trans fluid was definitely running out of the passenger side trans axle hole. I removed the passenger axle to do a general inspection of the passenger axle and to replace the passenger axle trans seal. It was original and 11 years old. Just a PM in my mind. I didn't bother to drain the trans fluid either, thinking that, since the driver side doesn't leak, why would the passenger side, but it did. And the passenger side trans seal is about twice the diameter of the driver side trans seal.
Believe me, I'm always on logic's side, but this experience dictated something difference.
