Hard time starting
Hey, so I just finished replacing the struts and strut mounts in my fiances 01 civic lx. I also replaced the passenger side CV axle and lower ball joint because they were trashed. Now for some reason it's having a hard time even turning on. I've noticed for a while that when I accelerate it makes a sort of quiet clicking noise (almost as if something on the exhaust is rattling but not quite). Within the last week that issue started and seems to be getting worse. It'll turn but won't quite engage and start. Sometimes it'll turn for several seconds and then won't start or act like it's going to start and just die. My friend said it may be the fuel pump. Does any one have any ideas?? PLEASE HELP!!
Re: Hard time starting
No, I did not. The only "engine" work I did was flushing the transmission fluid when I replaced the CV axle. But I don't think that would effect it, could it? I will take the car to Autozone tomorrow to have them check the battery charge. Oh, also the maint req'd light has been on for a very long time but when I had advance auto take a look at it, no codes came out. Is there another way to get the "maint req'd" codes? Because I heard that they're different then the check engine light codes.
Re: Hard time starting
The maintenance required light is an oil change light basically. To reset it hold the trip button and turn the key to the on position (don't start car). Keep holding the trip button until the maintenance required light flashes, then turns off, takes under 10s I believe. The light will come back on in 7500 miles, the oil change interval according to the manual. Most people change their oil every 3-5k or don't care so the light isn't really used.
Is the check engine light (CEL) on?
It could be a lot of things, most would cause a CEL.

Re: Hard time starting
So the check engine light has now come on and based on the codes it was puting out I have replaced the spark plugs, and oxygen sensor (since they are cheap but, I have not seen any difference). The battery was in fact going bad so I replaced that too.
Since I've been driving the car, it has become more and more difficult to start and now when I go to accelerate it will take a second to give power or when it does give power, it'll be intermittent which makes me think it's something more involved.
Another thing that I haven't replaced that was something that could throw that code was a bad MAP sensor, but I don't know if that would cause those issues.
Does anybody have any ideas or suggestions for me to check?
I'm running out of ideas on what could cause the issues =(

Re: Hard time starting
Olsen,
Did the clicking or "rattling" noise you first describe exist BEFORE you did the repair? Or are you saying that the sound didn't start until AFTER you made the repairs?
This is because that noise you are describing tends to be a common issue among our generation. I, myself, have noticed my car making that same noise for quite some time now (nearly a year) without any negative effects on operation or anything like that. Some have suggested that I need to adjust my valves, but I don't think that noise could be the cause of your engine not starting.

Re: Hard time starting
There was only one code and I don't remember the code on the top of my head but it started with P0... but the clicking/rattling has been going on since as long as I can remember, the car officially died this morning on my way to work. It was gaining and losing power like crazy (the rpms would drop below 1000 and then jump over 4000) and just when I was pulling into the lot it gave up and completely died/stalled without being able to turn back on. Fuel pump assembly maybe??
