I recently purchased my car. I purchased it from a private seller on ebay and while checking out the car he told us that his Mechanic said that the car just needs freon, we didn't think much of it. While my father and brother do know quite a bit about cars, us not being mechanics ourselves didn't immediately notice anything wrong under the hood. We purchased the car and took it to the mechanic the next day to be checked. Once the mechanic looked into the car he immediately noticed that the A/C system was missing. The ENTIRE system, even including the wiring. This is my father's trusted mechanic who is very honest with my father and has even done work for free. He told us that the job is $600, so we consult the people who sold us the car. We're now trying to come to an agreement of how much the person should return. My dad's mechanic says it's a $600 job including the parts, while the sellers mechanic says the job should cost no more than $300.

Have any of you ever needed to install an entire A/C system? How much did it cost you?

A new compressor will cost near $300 (I wouldn't use a used one myself, too much chance of it being bad). If it's just the stuff under the hood then it should be somewhere in between $400-600.
