Intermittent engine power loss. Can't diagnose.

For the last 3 weeks my 2001 Honda Civic LX (automatic) has randomly had a problem. Suddenly the gas pedal will drop about 3 inches and then there is a drastic loss of power to accelerate. If you attempt to give it more gas the RPM's go up but the car is operating as if the engine has only half the power it normally does or less. Once I turn it off and leave it for 15 minutes or longer when i turn it back on it seems to operate normally again. This has happened about 6 times so far. It doesn't seem to matter if I'm driving on the highway or on city streets or how long I've been driving it. I changed the spark plugs halfway thought the 3 weeks in the hopes it would fix it but I am still experiencing the issue. The temperature gauge and all the other gauges appear to be normal when this occurs and I've check all fluids and they are at their normal levels. Any help on this would be greatly desired and appreciated.

doesnt sound mechanical if sometimes it works normally. altho when you say the pedal sinks, makes me think something is loose so check the cable assembly under the hood while someone presses the gas (with car turned off). otherwise it might be a bad TPS sensor (detects throttle position and tells the ecu how much you are pressing the pedal), but then the engine light would be on.

Mechanical problems don't normally heal themselves randomly.

"Pedal sinks" makes me think of a loss of power, you have to push farther down to keep up speed.

Does it have the CEL on?
Got codes?
What are they?

Clean your throttle body for one... Otherwise codes are your first move ^

yeah i guess you need to clarify what pedal sink is. does the pedal physically press and come back the same, or does it become loose and fall down causing you to press on it differently to get a response?
