2001 Civic LX Gas Smell, lower MPG
2001 Civic LX Gas Smell, lower MPG
About a month ago, I noticed a gas fume/vapor smell under the rear driver side behind the wheel, next to the vapor canister filter. The car is 10 years old so I figured it could be a hose or a cracked line. There are no visible drops of gas leaking anywhere so at this point, I was thinking it was a pin hole leak in a rubber hose or that vapor/charcoal canister filter. I replaced the vapor canister filter only so far in hopes that it could solve the problem. I also should mention the fuel pump is fine, I checked the rubber gasket and it's perfect. The smell is only strong on the outside behind the area of the rear driver side tire after reaching a normal engine running temp. This is driving me crazy, it's not safe, and I can't stand having lower mpg- I filled it up and got about 300 miles to the tank! Details, 2001 Honda Civic LX Auto Trans 1.7l engine. No Mods whatsoever, bone stock.

sounds like a torn EVAP system (vapor recovery) hose. it can be very hard to find due to the complexity and number of parts in the system from the fuel tank to the engine. i guess start checking rubber hoses for cracks. vapor leak is not as dangerous as a liquid leak, but the vapors can be flammable under the right conditions (usually not when driving with outside air moving thru the car).

I have the same exact problem. Under the car driver side of the gas tank beside the rear wheel is a cover that protects the fuel hoses which go into some kind of valve which sends the fuel. Now I have no idea what it is called trying to find out what this part is. Has 2 electrical connectors and is made out of black plastic. I found a tiny leak where 2 screws seal the plastic together one side looks like a pcv valve going in which goes into this small drum looking thing that sends the gas. If anyone knows what part this is it would help. It only leaks when the car is running and you can smell it when the windows are down. Thats the issue.

I'm still dealing with it I'll have to go and grab one from the junk yard I cannot find out what part this is. It's not a hose its the valve unit under the plastic shield beside the driver rear wheel a seal inside is gone and it leaks at the seam where 2 screws hold it together. There's 2 electrical connectors and i believe 4 hoses going into this valve. I've check fuel system diagrams my haynes manual and can't find the part. It's made of black plastic. Easy to locate just have to pinch off the hoses unplug the connectors and unscrew 2 screws << I'll get back to you on this currently changing brake lines.
