CV axle seal issue
just had to replace both cv axle seals as the passenger side was leaking terribly, driver's side was fine but replaced both. got 4 seals from butozone all leaked like a sieve. so just went to honda and got both from them. and to make sure they didnt leak, rtv'd them into the case. now it looks like the driver's side is leaking a small amount during 15 mile drive, its not soaked down there but it is wet, and some accumulated on the trans case. i double checked the part number on my honda receipt with hondaautomotiveparts.com and they are correct.
what could be causing the driver side leak? even after i rtv'd them into the case? hoping the seals arent getting chewed up. thats what caused the butozone one's to fail. the interior rubber that mates with the axle was broken apart after test driving for a day.
axles look fine, smooth and no visible scratches on the mating surfaces.

Re: CV axle seal issue
The axle seals shouldn't need any rtv. They should come pre greased or you can just use a little tranny fluid. I'm not sure RTV would be wise for them though. You sure you didn't overfill the transmission? Are the seals fully seated? I used a huge socket and a rubber hammer to get an even seat. I had an issue with a leaking seal, but I don't know if it was my error when I was doing the job the first time or the guys who tried to fix it. I went and redid it and haven't had a leak since.
Re: CV axle seal issue
To be honest, I made a noobie mistake and didn't have all the tools at the time to properly do the job, so I ended up bringing it to a shop
. After that seal incident though, I had all I needed to get to it. I'd say maybe a 5 or 6. The only hard parts were getting the axle back into the diff and taking the axle nuts off. But I see you live in Texas, so I'd think you'd have a much easier time. It isn't too bad. Just remember to get a Pitman arm puller. That was the tool I forgot and I couldn't separate the steering knuckle from the LCA
. I could have used a hammer, but I would have risked damaging the ball joint threads.
