Help! No rpms/speed Cat converter or what?
Just bought a 01 Civic last week. Changed the oil and checked the air filter like Thursday. Bf sprayed carburetor cleaner in the engine and car started reving (pulsing) between 1 and 2k rpms. Next day it was fine. Yesterday was the first long distance drive. Went 25 miles and ck engine light came on and car wouldn't accelerate past 2000 rpms or 30 mph. When I let off t he gas and the rpms dropped, the engine cut off. I let the car set for a while and it is running fine (ck engine light off) until it warms up again. What happened? Codes: p1457, p1361, and p1362

Re: Help! No rpms/speed Cat converter or what?
i doubt the carb spray did anything, as the codes are unrelated. the EVAP emissions system would not affect how the car runs (this system recycles and burns gasoline vapors from the tank as a fuel saving feature). the other codes are for a bad TDC (top dead center) sensor on the engine. this is a big one and tells the computer how the engine is turning. i would not recommend driving the car until it is replaced because permanent damage can result.
P1457 EVAP Emission Control System Leak Detected (Control Canister System)
P1361 TDC Sensor Intermittent Interruption
P1362 TDC Sensor No Signal

is the engine light back on for the TDC sensor? if it is, the mech installed it wrong or used a crappy non honda sensor.
Re: Help! No rpms/speed Cat converter or what?
The mechanic just called me and said that the engine light is on but only has a code for the Catalytic Converter.... can that cause the car to have the same issues?... Mechanic says that I need to get a new Cat and that should fix it...
Update to car issues
Well... after changing the TDC sensor, catalytic converter and oxygen sensor... the car finally runs without breaking down, however, when the car heats up, I smell a burning smell kind of like a hot iron... The mechanic said that its just the new cat converter... but thats been over a month ago. Any idea why it still smells like its burning?
even though this car has given me more problems than all other cars I've had, I still love my Civic!

Re: Help! No rpms/speed Cat converter or what?
Yeah a day or two is normal for burning crap out of the exhaust area for some sort of exhaust maintenance, but a month, there's something wrong there if it still smells.
There may be something bigger in the exhaust where it was disconnected sitting on top of the cat.
What model is this an lx,dx,hx,gx or ex?
I ask this because it makes a big difference where the catalytic converter is located. If it's an lx, dx, hx, gx then the cat is located right on the exhaust manifold and you may need to remove the exhaust manifold to see if somethings sitting on top of the cat screen and maybe causing the burning smell. There might be something in the down pipe as well, but not likely.
If it's an ex then the cat is located much further away and you might not smell something stuck down there burning.
