P0420, P0133 and P1298 on 01 Civic
I found the following codes from an OBDII on a 01 Civic EX.
It started a few weeks ago where I was driving on a freeway, exited and then it slowed drastically, almost coming to a halt. I kept the gas pressed and it moved VERY slowly and I was able to get into a residential area to stop. I opened the hood and my wife said she could smell something burning. I didn't smell anything at all.
I've taken out fuse 6 to reset the MIL but it came back with 5 codes:
2 - P0420 - Catalyst Efficiency Below Threshold (Bank 1)
2 - PO133 - HO2S-11 (Bank 1 Sensor 1) Circuit Slow Response
1 - P1298 - Electrical Load Detector Circuit High Input
I didn't see a thread that specifically mentioned these three in combination.
Any help would be much appreciated! I would consider myself pretty handy (though still a newbie with cars) so if I can repair this myself, that would be best.
If it makes a difference:
MIL DTC
P0420
Pending Codes
P0420
Stored Codes
P1298
P0133
P0133
What do the different levels of codes mean in this case? Any thoughts on why two of them are duplicated as well?
Also, if it is the O2 sensor... how many wires are there for the 01 Civic?
Thanks!

Re: P0420, P0133 and P1298 on 01 Civic
I would say try changing the o2 sensor, im not sure if its a 4 or 5 wire system. The other code for the ELD (electrical load detector) could just be that part, easy fix about $20.
Sorry I couldnt be of much help, nothing major tho so dont worry! How many miles are on your car?

P0420=dead catalytic converter. Get a new one, reset ECM/PCM (fuse 6). If P0133 still comes on replace the primary O2 sensor.
OEM cat is #4, primary O2 sensor is #18: http://www.bkhondaparts.com/billkay/...itch=&hidIrno=
ELD part # is at the bottom:

It's on the underside of the under-hood fuse/relay box (#16):

Thanks Everyone.
I have 117K on this car.
So here's the situation. I was looking under the fuse box to purchase the ELD. The seller had two sizes and I needed to know which one I should order. So in the process of getting the fuse box up and figuring out that I needed to remove the 40 and 80 fuses, I decided to start the car to make sure it still worked. It started fine and the CEL was off. So I grabbed the OBD and scanned for codes and the only code that remained was the P1298.
Any thoughts on why the P0420 and the P1033 disappeared when I didn't repair those yet? When I get the ELD next week, I'll install it and scan with the OBD to see what's left.
Does it sound odd that just trying to get the ELD out had caused everything but that code to disappear? I didn't pull the positive off the fuse box. Everything was intact aside from my pulling the 40 and 80 fuses.

Re: P0420, P0133 and P1298 on 01 Civic
Intermittent problem. Sometimes a wire is bad , or a connector is bad, or the sensor gets wet, etc. Cats don't go bad all at once, they get worse and worse until they won't work. Chances are that your cat is going bad, prepare yourself to be buying one in the near future.

I have a problem I have a 2001 honda civic ex the car is having some kind of electrical problem the engine was replced the transmission was replace i bought a new alternator new map sensor new starter new other sensor new battery new wires for the battery cuz the mechanic keeps telling is all the stuff i replaced im still having the same problem where the car slows the battery lite the abs lite srs lite start flashing on and off and then the car wont start now the mechanic says its the eld gone bad can someone please let me know if theres something else might be going wrong everything else he told me was replaced and im still having the problem
Re: P0420, P0133 and P1298 on 01 Civic
I would definitely start with a new O2 sensor. laz you sure its #18 he needs not #19? If it's number 19 then it could be a fubbared O2 sensor and your cat might be okay. That being said, since your car is an 01 your o2 sensors are cheap as hell. Definitely replace that before that catalytic converter. I don't think part #18 has anything to do with the catalytic converter since it measuers gases before the cat, thats why I'm thinking its the other o2 sensor.
Re: P0420, P0133 and P1298 on 01 Civic
Dude, the primary sensor is the one before the cat. It does all the work, that's why they call it the primary. The secondary sensor just measures how good the primary is doing it's job.
