Unhappy Today my automatic transmission went crazy, please help me figure this out

I am looking for more information about this. I am a young female and I don't want to go into a mechanic and get charged for something I dont need because I look vulnerable. I have an 04 civic EX, automatic, 75k miles. You guys on here seem to know your stuff so I hope someone can help.

Two weeks ago I had a code to get my O2 sensor replaced, my car was running fine then even with the check engine light on. I replaced it and everything has continued to run fine, no check engine light.

Today out of nowhere driving home from work my car cept jolting in between gears. Then randomly out of nowhere my rpm's said they went to 0 and I couldnt get above 25 mph and my rpms still read 0. I pulled over to restart and decided to head to the mechanic, twice at red lights on the way there my car seemed to just stall so I would restart. I drive an automatic and didnt know this was even possible. My car would work after restarting then it would go back to jolting the whole way to the mechanic. After reading about this it seems like for others their rpm's would go really high, mine did not do this it would stay normal or drop to 0.

The check engine light did not remain on, and only came on once during my drive home but went right back off. I even saw my battery light flash once. I am so confused and after reading about other transmission problems mine seems very random. Could this have anything to do with the O2 sensor I just replaced?

How much would this cost me if I needed a new trans? Or is it possible that I may not need a new one? please any information is helpful im a college student and I cant afford any unnecessary costs. I dont want to be tricked when they call me tomorrow to tell me whats up with my car.

Re: Today my automatic transmission went crazy, please help me figure this out

its also possible the throttle body TPS sensor went bad. this can greatly affect how the trans shifts gears and can almost make the car unable to drive. in which case, you could try swapping in a different throttle body (make sure its for auto trans) to see if it fixes the problem. usually if the car still moves in gear, the trans is not dead. it could also be the cause of other problems, since it seems like your gauges were not working right and battery light came on. just to be sure, go get a free charging system check from any auto store (battery and alternator) to rule that out. the TPS sensor works off voltage signals thats why i mentioned the charging system. and no, 02 sensor will not cause any of these problems. check ebay for a used throttle body for 01-05 civic with auto trans, usually they are around $50 and easy to replace. its the piece under the airbox that holds the air filter, above the engine.

What turned out to be the problem? My 2001 civic ex started doing the same thing three days ago and it is intermittent and I'm trying to get it fixed. Please share what you did to get yours fixed.
