Really annoying cooling system problems
Really annoying cooling system problems
Okay so I've been working on my gf's civic for a few months now, starting to get familiar with it.
For a while now shes been complaining about the temp gauge going up. I found a receipt in her glove box for the t-stat, t-stat housing and fan switch being replaced just under a year ago.. so, i crossed those off the list. I assumed it was the radiator and went ahead and replaced that. Now, for some reason, it still keeps overheating - mostly on the freeway.
Last thing i can think of would be water pump? How would I know for sure if that's what it is? I checked all the hoses, they look good.

Re: Really annoying cooling system problems
this might be a long shot, but since its automatic it might be possible that the tranny is causing it to heat up since the tranny fluid runs through the radiator? apparently 01 civics have a big problem with auto trannys getting hot and breaking.
only thing i can think of, probably not though

Re: Really annoying cooling system problems
have an 03 civic with similar overheating issues...around town it is not bad b/c i think it doesnt get a chance to get hot enough...but after a 1/2 hr or more of freeway driving...as soon as you come to a stop or slow down in city traffic the temp gauge goes thru the roof....have had it to dealership three times....had new radiator, new t-stat, new fan sensor and still having probs....dont have any common signs of head gasket issues (i.e. coolant in oil or white smoke). Taking it in AGAIN this week...to check head gasket. Since the headgasket is about the only possibility left...i am hoping this is the problem...i am getting so annoyed!

Re: Really annoying cooling system problems
Have any of you changed the temp sensor. Those can go bad and give you a false reading. Also if the system is not bled correctly you could have an air pocket at the temp sensor causeing your issues.
Re: Really annoying cooling system problems
i bled that cooling system for like 40 minutes combined, could not get it to burp anymore. the only thing left i can think of is headgasket or waterpump... but, shows no signs of headgasket problems and the waterpump isn't leaking.

Re: Really annoying cooling system problems
If it was the water pump the car would run cooler on the freeway but when you stopped the temp would shoot up fast due to no air cooling the Rad.
Has the rad ever overflowed on you. Got so hot is boiled over?
