Help changing air filter

I will be changing out a few things this weekend and one of them is going to be my air filter. It hasn't been changed since I got the car(60000k ago) and probably wasn't changed before that(Ouch!). So it deff needs done.

I am very new to car maintenance but I am tryin to learn as quickly as possible. Is there a DIY on this website for the air filter? I found one for a cabin air filter but not one for the engine air filter. I heard it is one of the easist things to replace. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Re: Help changing air filter

just undo all the screw/bolts on the top air cleaner housing halfway and pull the top half off. the screws only need to be removed til they are loose, its easier if they stay threaded in the top housing but its possible to completely remove em if wanted. the worst thing that happens is the screws are too tight and it cracks the housing due to someone making them too tight from last time. so you may plan on needing a new air filter housing if yours breaks. otherwise once the top is off, pull out the filter and install the new one in the same way so it lines up and seals properly. carefully put the top back in and make sure it is seated properly, then tighten the screws hand tight with a screwdriver (not a socket wrench).

The screws will accept a phillip's head screwdriver, but a 10mm socket will give you better grip on the screw head.

Re: Help changing air filter

Use the socket, because after you use the Philips a few time they get so stripped you have to use the socket anyway.

Re: Help changing air filter

As was mentioned, just make sure you don't overtighten when putting it back together. It should be firmly tightened, but you shouldn't be straining once the bolt starts resisting more than a bit.

sorry for reviving this forum, i bought a second hand toyota corolla last year, and I want to replace my air filter, unfortunately most of the screws lost its thread so I can't remove the air cleaner housing, can anyone help me to remove those screws without damaging the air cleaner housing. Thanks
