burnt a coil pack...

had some fun the other day limping my lx to dads to fix iot . didnt know what was up till i read the code and looked into the coil packs. cyl #3 was burnt and after inspecting the old plugs, #3 was all burnt and loose from ther head.

i replaced the coil and plugs with ngk v-power gapped to spec and reinstalled, reset the fuel inj ecu, drove it and the car more pep but im still getting miss fires on the new coil. i think its bad...

i have gone through switching the coil to cyl #1 and got more #1 misfires. so it has to be the coil pack i just replaced... if i get another one and it happens again what should i start with? injectors, fuel/air mix? ecu junk?

Re: burnt a coil pack...

is it a honda coil pack or aftermarket? you really want oem honda as a replacement. or you could have fried your wiring. do the ignition wires look burnt near the coil? you may need to take off the plastic wire cover and inspect. also read the constant voltage at the wire with the car on (but engine off). wires should all read around 13.9v, if its any lower, you have wire problem. if all the wiring checks out, do a resistance test on the coil packs when they are off the car. get a multimeter and measure resistance of all 4 coils. if one is different than the rest, its bad.

Re: burnt a coil pack...

im sure the oem honda part will fix it. there are certain parts you do not want to use aftermarket and this is one of em.

While you're on coils, the rubber boot came off of two of mine, should I replace them, or all of them, or is there a way to stick it back on there. They all work still, but the car has 164,000 on it.

Re: burnt a coil pack...

Do you think I should replace them all at the same time though? What I meant in my prev reply is this isn't what caused my problem in the other thread I started, because it was like this before I had that problem, and it worked alright, but I wondered if my performance would be better if I replaced the coils. I've still got the rubber boots in there, they just stick to the plug when I pull the coil out because the silicon or whatever it is lost it's hold.

Re: burnt a coil pack...

coil packs should never need to be replaced. its not like spark plug wires that get old over time.

That's what I thought you said in one of your other replies, Gearbox. But I just didn't know if I should replace them if the boots aren't staying on.

Re: burnt a coil pack...

well if they still work like normal, i wouldnt waste the $$. other than being hard to change the plugs cause you gotta pull the rubber off.

Re: burnt a coil pack...

Yeah, I had to pull it out with a clothes hanger. But I did the simple test of pulling each coil off with it running, and the idle changed with each one. I haven't tested the resistance or anything yet.
