I love my new 2k2 Civic EX coupe but this start problem is starting to get me frustrated. It has happened to me three times since new (had it 21/2 weeks) and here are the details:

4/1/02
Vehicle did not start immediately and took three attempts (few seconds) before starting. Occurred at a park with dry conditions, ¾ tank of gas, 230 total miles, and parked on shoulder of road with a slight slope down to the right. Parked for 45 minutes.

4/9/02
Same problem, same park. Different spot but still parked on the shoulder of the road with a slight slope down to the right. Dry conditions, full tank of gas with 40 miles on the trip odometer, and 757 total miles. Had washed the car prior to stopping then parked for one hour and ten minutes.

4/10/02
Same problem, same park. Different spot on the shoulder of the road but still the same right hand slope down. I have parked at this exact spot twice before with no problems. Dry conditions, full tank of gas with 111 on the trip odometer, 828 total miles, and parked for 40 minutes.

The symptoms in common to all three occurrences was it always starts on the third attempt but is very hesitant to start and runs sluggish for a few seconds after starting--then normal. All three times the car was parked with about 10–15 degrees slope down to the right. Also, it has only done it at this park but I can’t see how that can be a factor.


Any ideas or thought I should be armed with and thinking before I take it in for service? I’m already expecting the standard unable to duplicate or this is normal with less than ¼ tank of gas response from them. Also, is anyone else experiencing this same scenario?

I had the same starting problem with my 02 HX when it was brand new. It happened fairly often for the first few thousand miles, now at 5K+ it rarely happens.

Thanks for the info. The dealer was pretty nice about it when I took it in today--at least I didn't feel that they were giving me the "run around." I'm going to keep driving it and recording the details to see if I can help solve the mysterious problem. Hopfully it will go away or become less frequent lie yours.
