new possible civic guy
new possible civic guy
I am working on a trade from a 01 Xtreme S10 for a 99 civic ex coupe. The truck has 95,000 miles on it and the civic has 125,000 miles. Its a straight up trade they are both worth around the same as far as KBB and NADA goes. But I cant seem to figure out if its really worth is since the civic has 30,000 miles more than my truck. The reason behind the trade is because I still do not want a payment and my wife and I just had our first child so I need more room. What would all of you do if you were in my shoes?
Re: new possible civic guy
What is the history on the civic? Who were the previous drivers etc.
If they were middle-older aged drivers or a driver that was not hard on the car, I would go for it. Civics are great cars.
Even if there was a problem, civics are pretty cheap and easy to fix.

Oh yea history....I don't know what age groups but it was a lease for 3 years then bought for 2-3 years then the current owner bought it in 2005. The age of the guy who has it now is around early 20's prob. It is bone stock besides a set of 17"wheels. I got all the info from a carfax, and it said no accidents etc.

Re: new possible civic guy
My only problem is a younger driver...I drive my car HARD AS HELL, and many other younger drivers do as well. It could still be a very good choice though. That wouldn't discourage me completly. Test drive would have a major influence on my choice.

Re: new possible civic guy
There's a good chance that the civic will be less problematic over 125k miles than that chevy at 100k miles. Civic's often times go to 200k miles or more. Why are you getting a coupe with a new baby?
Re: new possible civic guy
I am getting a coupe because it will fit the carseat and I like them more than 4 doors, also its the only thing I was interested in that offered to trade. Finally my wife has a 4 door malibu, I only need something else just in case say something happens to her car or if I have to pick up my daughter I can put her in the back instead in a reg cab truck right in front of the air bag.
Re: new possible civic guy
The thing with civics, are that they last forever... I just bought one with 150k miles on it. They're not hard to keep up on maintenance. And if anything needed to be replaced, its pretty cheap for hondas. Like ^^said, honda's will cause you less problems than the chevy, and will last longer also.

Re: new possible civic guy
Speaking of cheap preventative maintenance... Xdime, Make sure the timing belt and water pump have been replaced if you do get the civic.
Re: new possible civic guy
@ XDime - Take a test drive, bring it a well knowned capable mechanic. If he says everything mechanically is fine and u like the test drive then go for civic. Always remember that small things can last ur civic forever, such as: Oil Change every 2000miles or so with a best quality oil, genuine Honda Oil Filters, Name Branded Spark Plugs, Transmission Fluid, Water level, Genuine Honda Air Filters etc...
I have a relative who teaches Defensive Driving to students on 98 Civic DX and his car is on 273,000+ and still running smooth as hell because he keeps it well maintained. He charges $250 per student for course and now he have so much saved up that he just bought a factory sealed 08 Mugen Si on Custom order last year, and it's fully paid off. So basically that 98 Civic befitted him at a cost of basically nothing.
Re: new possible civic guy
I do not belive the timing belt or the water pump has been done. I still have to ask tho. But this guy doesnt seem to be a hands on type to know to do these things but he said all maintenace was done on time.
I would normally take it to a mech like suggested but I am in the military and do not trust/know any ones which is why I have come on here to see what is problematic etc. I am fairly good with engines but all my experiance has been with domestic cars and V8's mostly. For ex I never knew these had timing "belts" I am used to timing chains that you usually dont worry about as often as a belt.

Re: new possible civic guy
Ok I talked to the owner no timing belt or water pump has been replaced since he owned it. The last reported mileage was 76,000 miles. Would the dealer have replaced it then?
