sound from driver side (cv axles?)
sound from driver side (cv axles?)
it sounds like a clank, only makes sound when i hit a bumP on the road or hit a Pot hole and when i turn the steering wheel (when i say turn the steering wheel just a slight turn and it makes the sound) not to be confused with the annoying cv axle sound that we hear when a car with busted cv axles are making a turn.
i tried to imitate the sound by moving and shaking the susPension Parts only thing i came uP with that sounded similar to it was the Play in the axles im able to move the axles in and out of the tranny and the rotor assembly. they have about 1/4 of Play on both sides.
I think the cv joint? (if thats what its called) is messed uP, i dont know much of fwd cars or the Parts to a cv axle/joint. anyone ever had this? is this a joint issue?
im going to assume that when i hit a bumP it moves in and out of the rotor assembly.....
it started making noise after i came back from the mountain, I was using snow chains and i kinda abused it on the snow. (no traction)

Re: sound from driver side (cv axles?)
FWD car setups actually have to constant velocity joints. A dual offset and rzeppa joint. The dual offset is the inner joint that plunges (allows axel to move in and out for length) the outter cv is a non plunging fixed joint. Are you experiencing bump steer at all? Bump steer occurs when the tie rod ends dont travel the same arch as the control arms when they are compressed (going over a bump) causing it to pull but only when going over bumps. My guess though would be something loose like your strut. Does it clank when you turn the wheel while not moving? That could be possible loose tie rod ends. Maybe a ball joint is wearing out too.
Re: sound from driver side (cv axles?)
i dont believe i am experiencing bump steer, at least i have not been paying attention to that.
Yes, it makes the clank noise when it is parked. i turn it to the left and right and I can hear it.
my boss tells me the clank was coming from the cv joints. i picked the front up to see if i can make the sound again, but it looks like it only does it when there is weight on the suspension (wheel on ground)...
I tried shaking the ball joint ends and they would give at all, so i dont know where to go from here. take cv boot off and look for something gone bad?

Re: sound from driver side (cv axles?)
sounds more like bad strut mount bearing since it only happens over bumps. and maybe loose tie rod (if its a single clunk sound).
Re: sound from driver side (cv axles?)
oops i might of not been clear but i meant to say that it makes the noise while turning too, not just on bumps.
it makes the sound when i turn the steering wheel, while driving and static.

Re: sound from driver side (cv axles?)
it can make that sound while turning too. if its a single clunk sound, its either a tie rod loose or strut mount bearing. if its multiple clicks, its cv joint. easy way is get under the car and check the boots for tears or grease leakage. if they look fine, its prolly a suspension part thats going bad or loose. may even be a broken sway bar endlink.
Re: sound from driver side (cv axles?)
I'm getting a "clunking," noise also when turning left or right in drive. 99' civic, rock stock; front axles changed and all struts at 119K. The left front axle was just changed again @ 138K, same noise is still occurring. Lifted car off ground, body on jackstands. I shook tire top to bottom, wheel has no "play." I shook tire side to side and wheel has a little "play." Could it be Tie Rod Ends? Any INFO would be greatly appreciated. 1stackmack
