Unhappy '01 Civic EX Automatic Transmission broken?!

It's a Coupe and when I drove the car before this happened, it used to rev to 3k RPM on a normal slow pick-up. I don't know if that was a sign, but sudden and recently my car sudden failed while I was exiting a ramp and going up a slight slope. The car was in Drive, suddenly stopped accelerating and acted as if I had it in Neutral. The shift stick lets me change the Gears, so I tried going into Reverse, no change. All other modes (D, D3, 2, R) act as if the car is in Neutral. Is my Transmission broken?! Thank You!

P.S.
If it IS broken, i know i have two options: Have it rebuilt, or buy a another used one. What's the best and cheapest option? (Are there any other options?) Thank you, once again!

Re: '01 Civic EX Automatic Transmission broken?!

01 and 02 auto trans is really bad, but usually there is some sign that its going out like it would slip and rev higher than normal before catching the gear. and the pump starts to whine too. idk, if it just died without any notice, its prolly not the trans. it could be, but i have a feeling your timing belt broke or something else.

Re: '01 Civic EX Automatic Transmission broken?!

Yes! My car WAS reving higher than usual. I bought it used, and since i got it, it had been reving higher than 3k even on the slowest pick ups. I don't even have a heavy foot and it was doing that. Then, it calmed down a little when i got a tranny flush, but the car still seemed jerky when switching gears. Although, it still seemed to rev high on the higher gears. On the highway, going like 60 or 70 mph, the ar would stay at a continious 3k rev minimum. I wonder if that's normal. I thought it was just because it was an old car, but now that you mention it... Do you still think it's the timing belt or something else? (Btw, the car has about 58k mileage on it.) (Oh, and thank you very much for the detailed reply. )

Re: '01 Civic EX Automatic Transmission broken?!

it sounds like a bad torque converter or something then. prolly trans related if its been a problem for a while. does the car sound normal when you rev it, even if the car wont move.

Re: '01 Civic EX Automatic Transmission broken?!

Yup, it sounds completely normal. if someone didn't look at what gear the car was in, they would think it's in neutral and i'm reving it. It's been a problem for at least a year, since that's how long ago i've bought the car.

Re: '01 Civic EX Automatic Transmission broken?!

yeah i would say the trans is done. if you can, find a shop that will rebuild it with the TCI master racing overhaul kit which comes with new clutch discs.

Re: '01 Civic EX Automatic Transmission broken?!

Ah, I see. Do you think that will be costly? I need a very affordable solution, because i need to pay my college tuitions, lol. I'll do some research on your suggestion.
(Thank you VERY much gearbox

Re: '01 Civic EX Automatic Transmission broken?!

you can call corporate honda and tell them about the defective secondary clutch pack, maybe they will offer to pay for some of the repair but idk, depends on how many miles. under 100k they will prolly help you replace it.

Re: '01 Civic EX Automatic Transmission broken?!

Darn. I already called Honda. They said they won't do anything, because the car isn't under warranty anymore. What about buying a used transmission? Will be any cheaper, you think? Any recommendations?

Re: '01 Civic EX Automatic Transmission broken?!

well i meant call corporate honda main headquarters, not a random dealer. ofcourse they will say no lol. otherwise used would prolly be the cheapest option. if you can, try to get it rebuilt with better parts.

Re: '01 Civic EX Automatic Transmission broken?!

wow barely 58,000 - i'm nearing 57,000 and scared because my car's RPM pretty much stays still when I go up hill and when I shift from Drive to R or parked, or whatever, I actually hear the gears if i roll my windows down. Don't know if this is normal.

actually, check this linkage under the center console. This happened to me once. I have a 2002 Auto. It thought i was in different gears blah. The bolt on the cable came loose from the shifter. Just a guess, hope its whats wrong cause it will save you alot of money. Good luck my friend!
