2005 Coupe EX getting horrible MPG
2005 Coupe EX getting horrible MPG
Ok, so I went to Costco to fill up 87 gas on my 2005 Coupe EX.
I used about 6.4 gallons of gas (half a tank-ish) and I recorded that I drove around 135 miles. That comes out to 21.1 MPG! I think this is horrible. Please help me solve this solution.
My mods: AEM v2 intake, 2 1/4 exhaust piping (stock muffler), dropped 2 inches, and I have a subwoofer/amp installed. hahaha
This has been going on ever since I bought the car. I've been getting really bad gas mileage.
Here are some factors that you might consider when replying to this:
-I'm semi-alright at stick (manual)
-Sometimes I rev up to like 4.5k on 1st gear (probably like 10 times in one week)
-I only drive to school and work which is city driving only. I know I know it's constant stop-and-gas, but shouldn't I at least get around 26 mpg for that?
-I live on a hill, but I don't even drive 20% of the tank on the hill.
hmm..i might be forgetting some other factors, but this 21 mpg is killing me! I bought a non-SI civic because I wanted the excellent mpg! What in the world!? I never even race with my car!
Oh man...if you guys could help a brotha out, it would be really nice! Thanks to anyone who took the time to read this cry for help haha

Re: 2005 Coupe EX getting horrible MPG
when I was turbo the lowest I got was 14 mpg on 100 octane (with some track time) Filling it up at $6/gal was no fun... haha
Re: 2005 Coupe EX getting horrible MPG
I still get 22-28 mpg on RSX injectors boosted....of course if I drive it good.
Highway I can get 28-32 mpg turbo....
before turbo
30-34 mpg city & 38-40 highway.......low 20's for the city is horrible for a civic. is the a/c on permanently?

eh, having everything new didnt help me. i do maint before it even needs it. i have new oil, trans fluid, plugs, filter, etc and it doesnt do anything.
Re: 2005 Coupe EX getting horrible MPG
Serious question: How do you track your MPG? (To be clear do you record your actual mileage when you top off then record when you top off again and do the math or are you doing something else?) Reason I ask, your before turbo estimates are very high, unless your driving a hybrid at under 4K at less than 60 MPH.

Re: 2005 Coupe EX getting horrible MPG
40mpg highway is pretty average for the ex, and 45 is average for hx. hybrids arent that great man
Re: 2005 Coupe EX getting horrible MPG
Actually hybrids are shitty for what they are. Hands down any civic can keep up. The hybrids use massive amounts of battery power to "assist" engine power. Thus why they are a hybrid & not a full electrical run vehicle. Most hyrbids but specifically the prius & civic which I work on.....are very very heavY! They wear tires like a **** too....prius is worst though. The amount of MPG they saved engine wise is cut in half by the weight. The civic hybrids gets anywhere from 35-39 mpg in the city. My Civic wasn't very far behind at all. Same goes for the prius. They do not get near what they should for the amount of integrated BS & technology. You just paid alot of money for a vehicle that gets 5 mpg better than my civic, has 10x more expensive parts, & requires a certified hybrid tech to repair it. Oh and did I mention I have done 2 hyrbid batterys on the early 01 prius models. Both vehicles were above battery warranty near 150-170k range. Both repairs ended up costing 1500-2000 average(those were used batteries off ebay).....you don't wanna know the cost of a newer hybrid battery
Like $5-$8G's just of for the battery! The customers tried to trade their vehicles in.....they got like 800-1000 bucks
So I'll stick with my civic anyday of the week
Plus the people who buy these hybrids....wow....they cannot even operate computers & they want this super computer to drive around? Lets just say they make my days very long & frustrating. I think everyone who purchases a hyrbid should be made to take the same toyota//honda hybrid vehicles training classes I take! Last edited by FoSho; May 4, 2008 at 11:17 AM.
Re: 2005 Coupe EX getting horrible MPG
alright...
so i changed out my filter with a brand new aem dryflow filter
and also, i changed my spark plugs to densos.
i'm going to see how much mpg i get. what do you guys usually average?
does driving REALLY affect mpg? sometimes i like to rev up to 4k (one in like 10)
also, would getting a new battery for my car help mpg or no?

I suspect a vacuum leak. That will kill the MPG on a Honda.
Is your check engine light on?

Keep in mind fuel consumption is more dependent on throttle position that RPMs. I rarely use over 50% throttle, and I usually return in the ballpark of 28-32 city.
But I'm with the guy that said vacuum leak, I'd check everything from the intake manifold to the intake plenum to see if there are any obvious holes or anything.

Re: 2005 Coupe EX getting horrible MPG
he would have a CEL if there where a vacuum leak. These cars are VERY sensitive to anything like that. I think that if its running smooth and makes decent power its fine. He can also look at the spark plugs and they should be light gray. If they are falling apart and white he definatly has a leak.
Re: 2005 Coupe EX getting horrible MPG
i get about 33 MPG and thats in city. I get on it about half the time but when i dont i shift at around 3-3 1/2k. Like they said just try keepin your revs low and use forth and fifth gear. I shift to forth when goin 35 or 40 just to keep my RPMs low. Try that and see if it helps at all
Re: 2005 Coupe EX getting horrible MPG

Re: 2005 Coupe EX getting horrible MPG
that too ^ see if it makes a difference then if it drops to like 15 take it to honda and tell them you get between 15 - 22mpg WTF.
Re: 2005 Coupe EX getting horrible MPG
it might be your throttle... don't gas it hard.. like try babying it. i know mine drops down to around 30 cause i like playing with my intake.
