Sensitive steering

My wife and I got a new 2008 Civic LX on December 27. It now has about 4500 miles on it. One of the things we have noticed is how sensitive the steering is to any movement of the steering wheel. In fact we have both said it is almost dangerous. No more taking your eyes off the road to pick up something from the passenger seat. The slightest move of the steering wheel and you will find yourself half a lane over, or on the shoulder.

I have owned a lot of new and old cars in my life, from sports cars to luxury sedans. I was thinking "it is just a lot tighter than the 2002 VW Golf we replaced" but it is more like driving a go-cart.

I have checked the tire pressure and all four are right on 32 PSI which is what the manual says.

Am I being overly sensitive to my Civic's steering sensitivity? Is there a known problem or an adjustment that can be made?

Re: Sensitive steering

wow i wish the older model civic was like that. i had to put on all sorts of sway and strut bars to get that effect. i hated when i could turn the wheel an inch in each direction and have nothing happen to the wheels.

Re: Sensitive steering

I think over exaggerating the sensitivity of the wheel here. Just learn not to yank it and you'll be fine. Also, new to power steering? lol

Thank you, guys! You have given me a whole new perspective. I thought I was buying a family sedan, not a sports machine.

Re: Sensitive steering

I was on I10 today with a strong cross wind. At 75 mph I had to really pay attention to what I was doing or I would have wound up in the next lane. It was a fulltime job keeping the center of my lane.

I think I am going to drop the tire pressure from 32 to 30 to see if it makes any difference.

Re: Sensitive steering

For those that may care, taking 2 PSI off the tires make a big difference. I no longer feel like I am driving a car with too much caffeine in its system.

Re: Sensitive steering

you checked the pressure with car cold right? like 4hrs+ of the car sitting. cause air psi goes up when you drive. alot of shops adjust the pressure right when you drive in and it messes it all up.
