1987 Automatic transmission problem

Just bought a 1987 Civic Wagon with automatic transmission. Car only has 50,000 km on it. Sat in gramma's garage for a number of years and is almost like new. Here's the issue:

Transmission does not work in reverse or overdrive. Works in 2 and 1.

When shifter placed in reverse, engine rpm drops slightly and cars moves ever so slightly, like it's trying to move. Stepping on gas to increase rpm has no effect. Exact same thing in OD position. Moving shifter further into 2 or 1 gives positive engagement and car drives in that gear without apparent issue

Any ideas?

Re: 1987 Automatic transmission problem

Low on transmission fluid? Cable from shifter to transmission is worn, or its an internal problem which means you're SOL.

BTW this is the 7thgen Mechanical Problems Section which means 2001-2005
