Gauge Problems

Ok. Here's the story. So I put in my reverse indiglow gauges last Sunday. Looks sweet. I get my Valentine 1 radar detector on Tuesday. Can't wait to use it. Now Friday night comes, and finally a chance to drive somewhere. So I plug in the V1, get on the highway, and let her rip.

Everything looks good during the night, and now its 2am and I'm driving my girl back to her place. No hits on the radar and the roads are pretty clear, so i go a little faster than I usually go. (Usually have the cruise control set at 80 just in case) I look down and it says I'm going about 70, though it feels I'm putting more pressure on the gas pedal than I usually would when I'm going 70, and it feels as though I'm going about 100 as well. So I press on the gas some more but it just inches ever so slowly to 80. Ive only seen my speed inch like that when I was going from 90 to 100. So I press on the pedal some more...and WTF, its already all the way down to the floor! Tach says about 4500 but speed doesnt get past 80. By this time, I feel like I'm going over 100 mph. Try to figure out whats going on for the next 5 minutes, but nothing. I get to my exit and slow a bit to about 40-50 mph. I look down again and now it says I'm going 10 mph Eventually, I get to a stop. Start up again, and now everything seems right. The speed limit on the road Im on now is 40 and thats just about the speed I can maintain and still feel totally in control. (road is real tight and winddy) I get to the speed where I get a bit nervous and look down. 45mph. Cool, seems right now.

I figure, the top part of gauges I just put on must be 'bubbling out' some, so when the speedometer hit 80, I kept going faster but the needle couldnt. Figure just go to bed, wake up the next morning and test it out when I'm going home.

So about an hour ago, I'm on the highway heading back and here's my test.
-Set the cruise control at 80.
-Accelerate past 80 then slow down some.
-Flip the cruise control back on to the saved 80mph setting.
-See if there is any variance.

Alot of stupid drivers on the road today. (guys sitting on the left lane. no one infront of them, yet they dont move over) Had some trouble testing the speedometer out because I had to keep accelerating past the fools, though I look down and it seemed fine today. Would get to 90+ and drop back down to 75, back up to 90+ and back down again. Needles seem to be working fine...but now I look over at the tach and it doesnt get back 1000. I drive a little more, and now it drops all the way down to 0! I figured I just ****ed up my gauges and I'll have to take it to the dealer and hope they'll fix it under warranty. So I get to a stop light eventually. Come to a complete stop and light turns green. Take off, and now the tach is shooting up to 3000-4000 like it usually does.

What do you all think the problem is? Has this ever happened to someone with unaltered gauges? Do you think I should take this to the dealer and 'hope' for a factory defect? I apologize if this has been covered already. I have this dinner date with my girl and her family and friends and I dont have time to do a search. I'm actually running a little late as it is. I was planning on fixing up my reverse gauges tomorrow anyway. Its a bit off center and I was gonna put some double-sided tape under it. Any suggestions?

BTW, what's the max speed on the stock 2002 EX sedan? I figure I probably hit it last night and didnt even know it

Well it won't be under warrenty since you changed the gauges. You have voided that warrenty. I have a 2k1 DX and my car has done that before. I was cruisin down the freeway doin probably about 80 and my speedo was reading 40 so i got off the freeway and i was in second gear and reading below 0 so i stopped the car and started again and it was fine it has done that a couple times now but the a$$holes at Honda won't fix it cuz they can't reproduce the problem. It has also gone from 70 down to 30 and then back up. Like same thing cruisin down the freeway and i'll be going 70 it will quickly drop down to 30 and then pop back up. Same thing dealership can't fix problem cuz they can't reproduce it.

Anyways, I'm pretty sure my new gauges were the problem.

yeah, i tried to put the gauges in too and my speedometer didn't work at all at first then i took it all off again and messed with the needle and now it works but i can tell it's off but it is off both ways. like when i'm rolling slowly at least going 5-8 mph the needle stays on 0mph. but when i'm going like 70 it says i'm going like 80. so i don't know what to do

ok...i put in reverse idiglo gauges and they look good

couple nights ago i was driving home at night (about 10 minutes into the trip) they just quit (stopped working altogether)...couldn't see a thing unless i went under some road lights...i figured one of the wires (- or +) came loose so that was the reason

but...today i tried them and they worked just fine (just turned them on to check)...so the wiring is ok...i'm wondering if they are a bad set or the wiring is bad...i wired them directly in the steering wheel column to the headlights gauge (take out the clip and find which turns on when you activate the headlights)...this maybe too much power and could cause the gauges to overheat...though i didn't feel the apparatus was hot when i checked them after they quit working

i'd like to know what wires you wired yours to and with directions to find those wires...i'd like to try that before i complain to the company

so is that the blue connector that connects to the gauges you had to disconnect to take out? (you didn't say in the diy what blue connector it was...if it is, then that's easier than what i did since i found the connector to the stalk where the headlights were in the steering wheel column

Yep. Its the one that was originally connected to the gauge cluster. The left one

Hope that helps.
