Question Shifting Gears & Double Clutching

Yo, for the past few weeks or so I've noticed sometimes when I'm shifting gears, it won't go into gear unless I pull the shifter back to N and re-clutch. The best way I could describe the behavior is it feels "stiff" when it does this.

My girlfriend has claimed that it has popped out of gear before, but I've never experienced that and I'm pretty much driving it all the time. It may have been that she was unable to PROPERLY get it into gear (ala double clutching) and it slipped on her.

Weird thing is the past week its been virtually gone, but I felt it again today.
Additionally, my clutch squeeks every single time I push it, and it is annoying as hell. I think I remember a thread where the conclusion is we civic drivers just have to deal with that. I've WD-40'd it and it helped for about a week, then back to squeeking.

Anyway, any ideas? (more specifically about he double clutch issue! )

When is the last time you changed the tranny fluid?

Clutch squeak, is it interior or exterior. If interior try a lithium grease instead of WD40 (WD40 is not a grease). If exterior lube the slave cylinder. You'll have to search for the DIY since all the links I have are dead.

Well I'm embarrassed to say I've never changed the tranny fluid. I'll take a look at it today though. Is that a common symptom of low tranny fluid?

As far as the clutch goes - its all internal so I'll pick up some grease on the way home.

Thanks again!!

Low/old tranny fluid can make the gears not mesh as easily. Change the tranny fluid and the gears should flow easier. Tranny fluid should be changed at 60k miles I believe. Pretty easy to do. I believe there is a DIY on here somewhere with pretty pictures. Basically there are 2 bolts - low one that 1/2" socket (might be 3/8) fits into and upper one above. Remove top bolt, then remove bottom bolt and the tranny fluid will drain out. Replace bottom bolt when empty, lower car to level, then use long funnel to fill the the top bolt until it starts coming out. Then replace top bolt.

two things, these are both tsb's (technical service bulletins if u didnt know) 2nd and 5th have been known to pop out of gear, mine has done it before, tho not in a while, and the clutch squeak is fixable if you know what your doing, just search for tsbs in the forum, ull find it...

I got my squeaky clutch silent by sticking the straw thingy from the can of lithium grease into the clutch pedal master cylinder (where the metal bar from the clutch pedal goes into the master cylinder, in there) and squirt away. I actually changed the spring on the pedal to make the sound go away, before I tried the lithum grease in the master cylinder. Used the grease last winter and the squeak is pretty much gone. Sometimes it comes back faintly, if I put the clutch in or out very slowly, like I'm trying to make it squeak...

I had a clutch squeak that took forever for honda to fix, tho it was under warranty. There was a TSB for a bad spring in the master cylinder, and they replaced the whole thing for free. It continued to squeak, tho, and mostly once the car warmed up. That ended up being just slight oxidation on the piston of the slave cylinder, tho. The stealership buffed that off for free and i've been good for at least 10k miles since then. However, my squeak was definitely coming from the engine bay, not the interior. I will also say that the squeak may be unrelated to the slippage, and for that I too would recommend changing the tranny fluid. Let us know how this works out for you.

thanks for the responses people. lately I haven't noticed the clutch/shifting issues at all, which is weird if you ask me. I know that something still has to be done. I'm going on a 4 hour trip this weekend so I think I'll just take it in for the tranny fluid change sinse I have absolutely no time to get this done.
