A sure fire was to tell???
How can I tell if my "half shafts" are bad?
How long do half shafts usually last??
Does driving hard affect your half shafts???
When I’m in reverse & I go in circles I hear a click, click, click, click, click, click. (Its fun to go in circles in reverse
)
Could this clicking I hear be the end of my half shafts???
THANKS!
PS: Ill be installing an 04 tranny VERRY VERRY SOON! Should I replaice the half shafts while Im at it????

I do it when I leave my drive way.
Some times I take it too far.... LOL!
But it I hear a click click click click click click click.
Sound like its comin' from the half shafts.

Ya, the same thing just recently started happening to me. it only happens when i back out of my parking space and turn the wheel to the left. so i did some research and talked to a few of the mechanics at the dealership i work at and they said that absolutely it is probably the cv axle. another but unlikely possibility would be a control arm or just the control arm bushings. now what you are describing sounds like the exact same thing that is happening to my car and im about 90% convinced on a cv axle.

sick new sig gear!^
Nope I never ever get the clicking when going straight.
Only hard turns & in reverse.
So im under the impression that I should replace the whole half shafts?
Or just replace the cv joints???
HELP me out guys!

it is your outband joint.....the bearings and the other components in theres are shitting out, prolly they are seized too. so you may have to replace the whole axle. this just recently happened to me when i bought some type s axles(to finish up my 5 lug swap) and one of the was stiff to move around, and this is very unusual for cv joints cuz they are suppose to move more freely with little effort. whell i tried to tap out the outband joint and it would not budge no matter how hard i hit it and also i got so pissed off at it i tried a air hammer, and funny thing is, it never came out. so its gone to ****.
so best answer i can give you is to replace your axle.

yea but if ur doin it ur self it would alot easier to just replace tha whole axle. n besides it dosnt cost that much n u have to take ur old one back as a core. i replaced tha axle on my 90 CRX Si and i must say replaceing one on a 7yh gen. civic would b a cake walk. j ust hit me up if u need any insight.

well to tell you the truth its gonna be REALLY hard to try and get the cv joint taqpped out. if its clicking now that means its seized onto the axle, meaning that the cv joint and the axle shaft took too much wear and tear and so the metal in there is all wavy, thus making it impossible to tap out the cv joint.
tapping out the cv joint isnt all that hard to tell you the truth. just take 2 to 3 good hard hits with a 2 pound hammer and a punch to the joint and it comes right off.

Having rebuilt and replaced many honda CV axles, if they click when you turn hard, the cv bearings are getting worn, but don't worry about it. Check the boots for damage. The joint can be re-greased and a new boot installed and it won't get worse. But you have to pull the whole thing out do do it.
If it clicks when you make a mild turn, the joints are pretty loose and should be replaced. They won't seize or fall apart though. The boots MUST be busted for them to get this bad. Again, the axles have to come out for repair.
If they click while driving straight.... you waited wayy to long or are REALLY cheap. Change them out NOW. THe bearing cage is so worn that the (usually 5) ***** can fall out of the joint during a tight turn leaving you stranded.
Again, the axle has to come out.
In the first case, you can remove the axle, put it in a vise and hit the outbord joint with a drift and a hammer. It'll pop right off the axle. Clean and re-pack the joint with CV grease, install a new boot and drive the joint back on. Re-install. It may click a little on tight turns but will run for several YEARS with no problem. Cheapest fix.
In all the other cases, same procedure except you can replace the whole outboard joint and boot. This costs about the same as a rebuilt axle.
Or you can drop in a whole rebuilt axle, no muss no fuss, about the same money. DO NOT buy a cheap rebuild, as they just re-pack old joints and you may get a clicking axle for your money. I suggest if you are going to do it, buy the joint and boot kit and rebuild it yourself.
The ideal solution is to check the CV boots regularely. The joints generally don't go bad unless dirt gets into them. A freshly torn Boot can just be replaced for a few $$ and some elbow grease.
The hardest part is getting the big nut off. And ALWAYS put on a new one.
Best of luck.

I check my boots every oil change! They are great!!!
No tear no problem no nothing.
My question to you Tinman is should I replace my cv joins when I get my tranny installed???
Gotta take the axles off to install the tranny, so it sounds like a good idea to do them at the same time.
BTW check that you get axles for 5-pd vs Auto, if there is still a difference. Had an axle replaced in my 90 vic and lost all the tranny fluid and couldn't get to 5th since they purchased and installed an auto axle on my 5-sd.

Yeah, run them till you do the tranny and swap them out then. The work is the same plus removal of the tranny, so why do it twice.

well id try this first. take the axle out and try and tap the outband cv joint out first. if it doesnt come out within like at most 10 hard hits. then id say it would be much easier to just get a whole new axle.

Ok thank you for the response!^
I dont do labor!
none of it. maybe some simple **** but no hard labor!
I dont have the time, tools, or patients to tap out my CV joint...
Because of this,
Should I just buy a new axle's???
