2002 Civic Automatic Transmission Problems HELP!
This may sound stupid ,but everyone in 7th gen civic that has a 02 should get together and do like a mass mailing to Honda. And let them know that we know about the problem. Maybe if enough people say something about it they might get spooked and do a real recall. I mean "maybe" paying part of a trans bill isn't enough if the knowingly put bad trans in our cars. I know I expect better quality from Honda.
You sould tell the RM from Honda " I guess I'll have to consult with my lawyer" when he says that they won't do anything about it. If one person lets them get away with it then they will screw everyone.

It would take a class action lawsuit to budge a company as big as Honda. Threatening on an individual basis is useless. You are like a mosquito to them.
Do NOT do this unless Honda will absolutely not pay. Otherwise they will use the non-honda fluid as the perfect excuse to give you the shaft.

Just got off the phone with the dealership and HOLY **** Honda is going to cover 100% of a BRAND NEW not a rebuilt one but a BRAND NEW transmission. I can't believe it!!! I am so pumped!!! They must be getting a lot of these and realizing that yeah we do have a problem! I am dumbfounded. HONDA FOR LIFE!!!
Yeah on July 12th it's going right into the shop so Honda can stick a brand new trans in it at no expense to me. I suggest this. Go to NHTSA.DOT.GOV pull up all the technical service bulletins about the trans. Print them out, highlight them, write a letter to the dealers service manager and be nice tell them that you religiously take your car in for service when needed, tell them that you and your family have stuck by Honda. Befor you even do that call Honda of America and talk to them, tell them that the car is in the shop and that you are aware that there is a problem and a defective part called a clutch pack carrier that was designed to thin and that the car only has 75K BE NICE. I truly believe that is one of the keys that got me my free trans. Tell them its not right and that you have seen this problem posted all over the place and the TSB's. Talk to the dealer about the defective part, ask them if they have come across it and if they have more points for you. Make a case with Honda and they will talk it over with the regional rep and I believe that there is a good chance that you will win. I think that they are going to see more and more of these as the cars in 01-02 approach 60-75K and that is just not normal for a trans to go out like that on a Civic let alone any car.

no, rebuild tranny is junk, everyone knows. it will most likely be new. i asked around here even and they said on 01-02 civic, they replace with a brand new tranny. rebuild not an option.
I also was told new is about your only option in most areas, including local tranny shops. My local transmission shops (all 3) said they don't rebuild these, they are only sent in as core's and new are installed.
I did find one shop in the Tri-Cities, Washington area that was willing to rebuild but the price for that was more than a new one, which makes no sense.
If you're really on a budget, you can find them on e-bay and wrecking yards for around $800 (figure $200+ for shipping). Then have a local shop install, which should be around $500 or do it yourself. Though, there's a few different auto's for these years depending on year and model and where they were made. If you just want to fix the car and sell it, stick in a used one and get rid of it and save yourself $1500.

Will the new transmission be any different that the original one?
Did Honda improve the design of the new transmission?
Do the new trannys have the same defect?
Do the new trannys clunk when you slow down and gas it?

well, right now im driving my mom's 04 civic auto 4dr. the transmission is smooth. RAWR!!!! just makes me want to get that new tranny. cuz my auto tranny on my 01 civic blew last week. the engine runs and everything but of course i hear that whining sound. and the car only has 85K+ on it. WTF?!? but the 04 for now is smooth. but it hasnt been long enough yet to tell what might happen in the future. cuz my mom's car only has 20K+ on it. so who knows. but for now, its really smooth......
Re: 2002 Civic Automatic Transmission Problems HELP!
i've got an '02 auto EX with only 48k+ on it, and mine's been slipping for a while. The other day my brother-in-law (honda/dodge tech & trans tech at the local dealer) drove it and said that he thought it was pretty bad and i should try to get it covered. do you guys think that if i bitch about it with the miles that i've got that i could get it taken care of?
Re: 2002 Civic Automatic Transmission Problems HELP!
Has anyone had any success with getting Honda to replace the tranny when they are only having the slipping problem, or do you have to wait till the tranny goes completely? I am starting to notice a large amount of slippage and want to get it taken care of now before it becomes a huge problem..
Re: 2002 Civic Automatic Transmission Problems HELP!
Gah!! that is ridiculous.. can't believe I have to wait till it gets worse.. I mean this is my DD (as most peoples I am sure) and I drive 100 miles every day.. I can't just sit and wait till it breaks and THEN get it fixed.. I would rather fix it now and not have to worry that during my 100 mile drive it's going to break..
guys, is this ALL 2002 Civics are just a batch of them?? I have an 02 Civic Ex with 108,000 miles and the tranny shifts just fine. I just drained it and put new Honda ATF in, the old stuff looked pretty good yet though. Was some minor fillings on the magnet. Once in a while if I am going down a hill coming to a stop sign it will downshift and jerk, but that is only downshifting and going down a hill. ON flat surface it is smooth. Just wondering if it is the whole 01-02 years. thanks,

about to approach 90k on an AUTO 02civic and the tranny still function smoothly.
on the TSB or whatever, is there a limit on milage of the vehicle for them to fix the problem?

Re: 2002 Civic Automatic Transmission Problems HELP!
tsb is usually only fixed under warranty, unless the dealer does it as good will which is doubtful for a whole tranny replacement.
Re: 2002 Civic Automatic Transmission Problems HELP!
so id be doomed if the tranny goes out, huh?
is there a diff b/t this TSB and a recall like the 1st generation type-s v6 tranny?
btw, my friends 02 type-s tl was over 100k and they still honor the fix.

tsb=technical service bulletin. they are put out to address issues that come up and there are a whole bunch of em anything from door panel rattle to defective air intake. recall is different, these are major safety issues that honda is required to fix at any time if your car qualifies.
Re: 2002 Civic Automatic Transmission Problems HELP!
Is it the grade logic module causing the jerkiness?
How does the grade logic know you're going up or down a hill?
Is this the same jerkiness when you slow down and then quickly accelerate?

Re: 2002 Civic Automatic Transmission Problems HELP!
man, i knew my trans is screwed...i was gonna post about it here but i read this post and its exact problem, its an 02 auto that slips from 2 to 3rd gear when engine cold, then its gone and rarely happens during summer. Only problem i can see is i have over 236k on it already, dang! But i will try and call dealership and see what they say. There's prolly more people with the same problem but not complaining cuz its an expensive fix?
