My Pooor Gas Mileage!!!
Well time to rant about my gas mileage, once again. I'm up to 9,400 miles, constantly averaging 24 MPG ever since I got the car. About to get my third oil change. If it doesn't drastically improve, I'm takin the car to the dealer over my spring break. I messed up my gas gauge needle anyways when I installed my gauges. Before I go there, I'll take off my short ram intake, cuz thats a thing to blame it on. I still have my catback exhaust though. I know it depends on the dealer, but would they blame my 8-10 MPG less than its suppose to gas mileage on an exhaust? My car looks very hooked up, but I only have 2 performance modifications. I just stopped by to talk to a honde tech last week, and he said he thought it was my rims and tires? I think I'll take it to a different dealership first.....

<< It has nothing to do with the rims and tires >>
it very well could have to do with rims and tires if you got big HEAVY rims
the dealer wont fix your gas gauge needle under warranty. they might even say the only way to fix it is to replace the whole gauge cluster

oh they fixed it last time. I mean the first time I messed up hookin it up I blew a bunch of fuses, and a lot of stuff didn't work. I'll just take the gauges off and say it did it by itself. I'll just say all the scratches and stuff that looks different is from last time before I got it fixed. They'll have it on record. and I dont think 80 pounds will make up that much difference.

heavy wheels cause far more performance loss and gas mileage loss than the same amount of weight inside the car because its all unsprung weight. im sure someone else here can explain that in more detail

have you reset your ecu once you added your bolt ons? Ive heard if you dont that can mess up you milage since its running on the old fuel setup (ie still thinks your stock air box is on).

I asked a while ago, apparently my mileage reads fast! so I'm actually driving less than the thing says. I haven't reset my ECU, but I don't think I drive too much. I go around and about the city with my friends every weekend. Longest commute is like 10 miles. Before I got rims, intake, etc. I used to drive during the summer all the time. Same gas mileage, no difference.
I have a similar problem.... I don't notice that much though. I have an HX model (I added the AC), and my car get less milage than my ladies LX. Probably the way the 2 cars are driven though.
I think I average 30-32 mpg. I'm supposed to be getting 38-44???? Oh well, I guess this is due to my AC...

I have an HX as well (CVT, not 5-speed) and right now I'm averaging 32 mpg (plus or minus 2 mpg). In the summer when I got my car I was averaging 36 mpg (plus or minus 2 mpg). I thought for sure there was something wrong with my car when I saw that the gas mileage kept falling. But then someone told me this decrease in gas mileage could be due to the change from summer-blend gas to winter-blend gas. They change the gas in the wintertime to make it easier for the car to start but it tends to result in lowered fuel economy. I looked at my plot of gas mileage and sure enough I noticed the dip to lower gas mileage around late October/early November which is probably when the type of gasoline got switched in my part of the country.
Soo... maybe your low gas mileage is due in part to this winterized gasoline. And perhaps in part to the intake. And in part to your rims. If you add up all these causes they could produce the big effect that you're seeing.

Ok, I just got new tires and my 3rd oil change. Last two tanks 24 MPG AGAIN! well I'm gonna take it to the dealership next month. Gonna remove my intake and put the stock back on. Can't put the stock exhaust back on so easily though. I just don't want to go over there and have them blame it on my exhaust or maybe even my wheels or my system or something. Do you think a dealership would just blame it on my exhaust and tell me to go home?

its the magnaflow, not loud at all. but I do have an injen sticker on my window.....so I'll just go riceboy style and say I like the sticker for looks
. I cant put the stock one back on cuz I had a universal muffler welded on, then I sold it with part of the pipe on it, and my friend never gave it back . Has anyone else gone in about mileage? I know Im not the only one.

i experienced that in my 88 dodge omni, got 33-36mpg in the summer, only 30-32 in the winter. the changes were sudden, as soon as the winter gas was in the mileage went down and as soon is the summer gas was back, the mileage went back up. ive been getting 35-37, and as high as 37.75 mpg in my civic, and i havent driven it on summer gas yet. im hoping to get 38-40 during the summer
also people remember that if you have different size wheels/tires it will affect your odometer reading, so you might not be calculating with the number of miles you really went
Yikes! Lots of good & bad stuff here.
I just had my 20k service done and my latest mileage was 39.9 mpg. 10 months, 20k miles. Never below 32 mpg and highest was 41 mpg. I drive Sacto to San Jose & beyound. 80 mph and still "average" 34-36 mpg.
I also use syn. oil 5-30 Mobil 1 ... have 17x7's and nothing else.
Go figure.

HEY I had the same problem with mine i have a2002 LX it just got better over time once i hit 3000 miles it got better and better also try to figure out your fuel consumption this way!!!!! fill up your tank and hit the trip meter then when its time to fill up again divide the amount of miles by the amount of fuel it took to fill up that should do the trick and if you come up with the same mpg then iam sorry i thought i could help I was ready to almost give my car away once i was thought that the mpg was that bad but it got better or i was just figurung it out wrong by the way ijust got back from Vegas and i averaged 41 on the highway

I was having problems getting more than 33 mpg for awhile...But probably my last 8 tanks I've been alot more easy on the acceleration, and cleanliness of the shifting with the manual...I'm shifting at under 2200 rpm alot...Most the time now even doing mostly city driving I'm gettin around 37-40 mpg no prob...Last tank was 42!...I just had to cure my lead foot!
Yeah my gas mileage lately has gone down to the low 30's and mid 30's. But I have been a little more lead foot I will admit. But living up more than 5,000 feet forces the car to just run slow and needs a little more gas its a pain sometimes. Then I go back down to Phoenix again and I have power HEHE
I have a 2001 EX I am driving and I run 91 Premium in it, best you can get out here in AZ. I don't know what kind you are running octane wise? My car when I bought it just drank Regular 87 octane like a 12 oz Soda.

I have a LX 5 speed sedan, I know for experience that manual transmission means a better gas mileage. ever since i installed my intake i noticed a drop in a month period of 6-8 mpg. I installed a 2 1/4 pipe with a magnaflow and a wellded resinated tip and still no change. Im going to try reseting to ECU or reprogaming/chip the ECU to all my mod's.

My last fill up was 27.2. But that was with Mobil 89 octane. I decided to see if that would make a differnce, and I think it did. Now that i filled with regular 87 octane, I think it is back to the 22-24 mark.

<< i just got 39.47mpg on my last tank in my 5-speed ex coupe >>
Damn man. Thats nice. That would be nice to have with the gas prices going the way they are. 1.39 here for regular 87 oct, but at Sam's Club it is a 1.25. Thread Starter

Update from the dealership. I took the car to them and they checked O2 sensors and emissions, and everything was working fine. Then I talked to the guy and he said he doesn't know what to do. He said they could drive it around for a full tank, but I dunno what the hell that would do. "I wouldnt mind driving it home every night." I was about to hit him right there. Well he called Honda corporation and they said to do 2 test tanks, driving it til empty each time, and recording the mileage. I've been doing that the whole damn time, but they said this time "use the same gas both times." So now I'm off to do my test tanks, and "we'll see what we can do from there."
