cant get accurate reading on dipstick

I cant seem to get an accurate reading on the dipstick, I have a 2003 civic EX and I first thought it was because the engine was still warm so I let cool down overnight and I still get the same problem, the dipstick shows oil all over the stick.

Anyway any help or anybody else have this problem?

You sure it hasn't been overfilled? You can read the dipstick within a couple minutes of shutting the engine down.

Did you wipe it off completely then put it back in, and then check your oil level?

I did wipe it off before putting it back in, and I dont think its overfilled because even after I come back from getting the oil changed i have the same problem.

Well, the fact that you look at it after the oil has been changed doesn't confirm whether the oil was overfilled or not. Perhaps you can describe or better yet, take a picture as to what you mean by oil is all over the dip stick. Even if you didn't wipe the dip stick prior to checking, the oil will settle to the lowest part of the dipstick a couple minutes after the engine has been turned off. I have a feeling you're looking at just trace amounts of oil on the upper portions of the dipstick. The level of the oil is indicated by where the entire width of the dipstick is coated in oil.

Re: cant get accurate reading on dipstick

I have the exact same problem actually. The oil is just spread everywhere along the stick, streaks everywhere. I put in 3 litres (1 litre bottles) and then started to measure using the dipstick. But every time I pulled up the dipstick, oil was just everywhere on it. Yes I did wipe it every time I put it back in.
