HELP: oil pressure light comes on, car stops accelerating; restart and it's fine

ok this isn't for a 7th gen, but if you can diagnose this problem i'll be very appreciative

my dad's 1997 Dodge Caravan. this happened tonight while driving home. driving fine, all of sudden, check oil light, oil pressure light, comes on, and the car won't accelerate further. we turn off the engine, and restart, and the light disappears and the car is back to normal.

later, the light comes back on, and the car stops moving again. we turn off the engine, and restart, and again it's back to normal.

HELP!

edit: oh yeah we live in michigan, and it's really cold. and there's a lot of salt and crap on the cars.

After the oil pressure light comes on, how long till you cant accelerate any more? Basically some cars out there are made that when the oil pressure light comes on, it triggers a mechanism that shuts the car off to prevent any damage to the engine. You most likely need to take it in to have it looked at. You also could have a faulty oil pressure switch. But it could be a number of things.
