ummm... hot?

ok well i got out of my car and i heard a wierd clicking sound from under my hood. i pop the hood and turns out my exhaust manifold is glowing red (so the clicking sound was it cooling off). i had been driving a little on the "spirited" side, but still is this normal? i have an LX btw so my catalytic converter is in the exhaust manifold.

This happens in all cars. I think the clicking sound from udner the hood is the metal get smaller after being in extremly heated. When the metal gets red hot it expands.... when you shut your car off it immediatly begins to cool down making the metal shrink a little so the clicking is the metal shrinking.

Correct me if i'm wrong.... i'm not 100% sure but common sense says that this is what happens.

Here we go again. Someone else posted this. Can you take a pic because I've never seen it glow red. But the solution is send it to be jet coated. It will keep all the heat inside and help the engine bay stay cool. www.jet-hot.com

from what I was told in school is if your exhaust manifold or other part of exhaust starts to glow red, then you have a clog in that part. Basically there is something in there restricting airflow and it is causing that part to glow red and be extremely hot.

No it isnt normal. I drive my car like hell sometimes and nothing on my exhaust glows red. You either have something restricting airflow in there, or some other problem.

hmmm.... alrighty ill take it to the dealer. the engine itself doesnt seem to be running any hotter then usual, so its gotta be something with the catalytic converter. its still under warranty i think, so itll be another free dealer trip hehe. but streetglower, did u check it right when u got out of the car? cause i mean it glows for like 20 seconds then it fades away.

Streetglower is right. When I replaced my ex header with the one I got from you, there was all kinds of carbon buildup around the top ports. I know the lx header is different, so maybe yours is just clogging.

haha yeah that carbon buildup was from leaving my o2 sensors just dangling there. ive learned since then. it fried my sparkplugs too so i needed to get new ones. but yeah ill take it to the dealership, hopefully this time they wont say that they "cant reproduce the problem".
