WTF!?!?!? No Rev limiter!?!?!?!?
AHHH!!!! I think i've Fugged my car!! I was coming home from work today and from a stop light i went down the road a lil and i was in the right lane, there was a Mercedes in the left, and everytime i slowed down he slowed, down, everytime i sped up he did too. Anyways, there was this car that pulled out a ways up the road so anyway i wanted to get in the left lane so i punched it in 3rd, then all the way through 4th, then when going into 5th i miss shifted like a MOTHER!!!! Reved to 8,000 RPMS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I was like AHHHHH!!!!!! I thought there was a rev limiter!! I literally saw the needed just to 8!!! It went to the very end of the red!!! Now when i tap the gas with it out of gear i hear a weird noise!! It'll rev, settle, then you'll hear what sounds like something winding down. WTF is that!? Could i have damaged some internals?? What could i have messed up. I know i burnt the hell outta my clutch. I'm a very good driver! I can't believe i freakin miss shifted. Argh, i'm so mad at myself. Anyways, plz help me out here

Wow that sucks, but rev limiter doesn't work if you miss a shift. It can happen in an auto too by shifting the gear selector enough to downshift and push rpms into redline. Limiter only works when accelerating in a single gear and not downshifting. Best outcome is you just need a valve adjustment. Worst case the motor is done or will be soon. There are so many things that could've broken in there. Is the cel on yet?

Argh, knowing my luck my engines probably gonna give. Even though afterward it didn't seem any weakened or run any different. Only thing different in that weird noise. I'ma check my CAI tomorrow cuz i think i hear some noise coming from it. I'll get it looked at soon. "Is the cel on yet?" Cel?? What's that?

cel = check engine light = that light with an engine pic on it that lights up when something goes wrong.
Valve adjustment involves opening the valve case cover and adjusting the clearance of the valves using a special feeler tool. They have to be within certain specs. Grey did a diy for it a while ago. Not that hard if you get the tool.

No, my check engine light isn't on. i just looked over everything once more. It didn't seem as bad this time when i looked everything over. Only think i notice is ya know when you're engines runnin ya hear that tick tick tick tick tick tick.(cylinders combusting) Well, it's louder now and sounded like tick tick tick tick tickticktick tick ticktick tick tick, like it wasn't in a steady beat. Still hear that winding noise, still dunno what it is. Other than that, no other weird noises, no smells, no service lights. You think maybe i could just be over-reacting? I've never heard of a D17 over-reving once and blowing up. I just can't see it doing that. Aren't they supposed to be rather strong?

i did that a while back while on the freeway. i was in 5th and i wanted to downshift to 4th, but i accidently went into 2nd. it was bad, went way past the end of the redline on the tach. luckily i quickly shifted it back into neutral then to 5th and nothing happened. ran perfectly fine afterwards.
You might want to take it to a shop to have it checked out. If its making abnormal noises then something is wrong. It could be a bunch of things. Some expensive and some not. However some of the non expensive things may turn out to be expensive fixes if they aren't fixed now

That ticking comes from the valves. If it sounds different, check the clearance for sure. I've heard of people here downshifting two gears and blowing their motor in one shot. They are made strong, but not above 6k or so rpms. Just keep driving it and see what happens. May want to check the plugs too.

Thanx, that makes me feel a lil' better. Only, i wasn't downshifting, i was upshifting from 4th. I should have known better than to be quick shifting into 5th. Did ya notice anything weird about the car afterwards??? Hopefully nothing's wrong and i can just forget this day
. I'm sorry baby! I'm so sorry! *Hugging car* *Wiping finger prints*But yes, remember everyone, never shift too fast into 5th

I was downshifting in an automatic on an exit ramp, from D to D3, and then when I threw it into 2, it didn't do anything. Basically felt like I was in neutral. I assume that is the limiter...?

^^ gearbox is right about the rev limiter not working when you downshift and stuff. i dont know about automatics, but its true for manuals.
Eternal Vic, you must not be that good of a driver if you managed to mis-shift, eh. but just to let you know, valves can bend when you go over the redline, especially like how you did. that abnormal ticking probably isnt normal so you should get it checked up.
just as an example, a friend of mine did the same thing you did to his wrx. his rpm jumped to 9k. well, needless to say, messed something up and how he's leaking oil whenever he drives...

anyways, drove it around a lil today. Everything seems normal. Took it by my cousins house (he's a mechanic) today, he looked over it and said everything was fine. The ticking was normal. I must have just been paranoid last night. And even if there is something wrong with it, all the better reason to get a k20a2!

And if not then i'll just boost it.....wait for it to give, then get a D17 longblock off truehond.com and do a complete engine build and make a beast of a D17 that'll hold hella amounts of boost

dont waste your time and money on a d17, its not worth it. and if you want to do an engine swap, just buy a better car cuz you're gonna end up spending upwards of $6000. just my $.02 tho...

I'd rather stick with the D17 if nothing else then a k20 of some kind, but i wanna keep the civic. I like it. Plus no one around here has a modded 7th gen, so i like staying unique.

Humm wowser a tick tick tick is a bad sound... could have done what i did and bent connecting rod. yeah i said connecting rod, my engine ran fine, drove fine, just went click click click all the way down the road. But eventually it gave out. So i went ahead with my k20 swap. But an new d17A2 was only going to caust me 900 if i wanted the same engine. that was just my situation, hopefully yours isnt the same. Ide have it checked of for sure.
oh yeah. my check engine light came on, then went off. never saw it agian. dont know why either.

hehehe....OLD thread! This was WAY BACK in the day way back before i boosted. The engine held up just fine afterward. I boosted around 10lbs on it for months (ball bearing T25), then sold it, but the engine ran like a champ. If anything this was just the engine's rude wake up call.
170ish whp and 14.1 1/4's later, it was thanking me, ha.
