Unhappy Brake and related problem?

Hi all,

I need some of your guys eperience and advice. Whenever I step on the brake, I can feel there are something scratching through the brake pedal (80% of the time). Once in a while, I can feel and hear there are grumbling sound and brake seem like skipping when I press on the brake pedal, it will get especially loud when I apply my brake on the hill. It started only a few times in each ride (20-30 minutes) a month ago but now it is getting more prominent. Recently I notice when I am going forward (without the brake pedal), I can feel there is something scratching through my gas pedal. A few time, I tried not to press on the gas pedal, but I can still feel it and hear it. It is similar to driving on a rough road but actually I was driving on a regular smooth paved road. I have bought back to honda, the service technican said the brake pad may have been overheated (brake pad got hard) but not worn though (30% left), so he recommended me to change the brake pad (include service of the front brake) and also machine rotors. Now I like to know if both of the events (braking and goinng forward) are because of the brakes and if it is, do I need to do both, or just change the brake pad will solve the problem ($150CDN cheaper). I am planning to go back to dealership in the next few days, so I want to know what I really should do. Thanks for all your guys input!

I guess what you're asking is, if you should have your rotors resurfaced when you get the pads replaced? The answer is yes you need to do both at the same time.

Not sure what you mean by: "both events (braking and going forward) are becuase of the brakes, and do I need to do both"

The Honda tech should test drive your car with you in it, and show him first hand what the noise and vibration is. If your pads still have 30% left on them , then they shouldn't grind, so make sure if you have this done that it fixes your problem. Don't have anything done until the tech tells you that its the problem for sure and the tech drives the car.

I mean when I am driving forward (without the brake apply) and actually using the brake to stop, it made the same noise and feel from both gas pedal and brake pedal, but it is much more prominent if I apply the brake on a slope.

I talked to the service represetative in honda dealer and he told me it is safe to drive my car with 30% brake pad left, but he said my brake pad has been overheated, that's why it started to grind and make noise. One thing I didn't ask him about if this will also happen when I am not using my brake, so now I am wondering if the brake caliper hasn't fully released or something stuck in between the brake pad and rotors that would create that roughness when I am going forward without the brake apply.

I have been to honda dealership about this issue two times already but he assured me it has 30% pad left. I am quite confused now because like what you said it shouldn't grind if there is 30% left. The service representative said the brake is perfectly fine, it is because pad got hard. If i am going to change the front brake pad and machine the rotor, it will cost $250CDN to do it. It is not cheap at all, so that's why I want to know the exact thing I should fix rather than spending money on something that I don't need to.

Thanks for your input and looking forward to your response.

If Honda isn't going to cover this under warrenty then take it to a good independant shop and see what they tell you. Make sure a tech drives the car with you in it so you can properly point out whats wrong. A Honda dealer will charge much much more than a independant shop.
