For good practice and maintenance, change every 3000 to 4000 miles.
But the oil should hold its properties untill 7000.
I have a new 03 civic with 4570 miles. I am waiting to hit 5000 for a clean break-in. I am going to switch to castrol synthetic.

my dealer "told" me to change my oil at like 4k i think. i waited 'till like 3500 miles and changed the oil. I don't beat on my car much so I take mine to the dealer (and always will) for oil changes.

Well, it does cost more to get it changed at the dealer, but for me, the extra peace of mind is worth it. I figure that if some engine-related problem crops up later on, and they try to use the excuse that I did not maintain the car by regularly changing the oil, I have all of my receipts showing that the oil changes were done on schedule. They even have all of the service record information in-house.
A good friend of mine had her Kia Rio (I told her not to buy it) conk out after only 40K miles, and the dealer refused to repair the engine under warranty, saying that the required oil changes were not documented, since she had all the maintenance done by third-parties (Jiffy Lube, etc).
