Maintenance Required Light

Maintenance Required Light
Any idea why my Maintenance Required light would flash when I start the car? It's a 2003 and I just hit 8,000 miles.
EDIT: I know how to turn the light off, but "putting electrical tape over the flashing 12:00" won't fix anything. If I knew what to search for I would.

search for Maintence Required light! And also they give you a manual for a reason ya know. It is in there!!! The light comes on every 2k before a scheduled maint.
