throwing good money after bad

Hi I have a 2009 Civic 4 door auto. DX-G 1.8 litre. About 3 years ago the check fuel cap lite went on, so I put a new Napa cap on it didn't help, a mechanic told me civics like Honda caps only, so I put an original new cap on, that didn't help. Then the fuel cap lite would go off and the check engine picture would go on back and forth. My Mech. buddy put it on the scanner and P145c and P0497 show up. He said bring it to me I will smoke it, He calls me at the end of the day and said he put a evap purge valve in and a canister purge valve in and said that he had to drain the Charcoal canister it had gas in it, and there was no visible smoke escaping. I tested both old valves with a 12 volt battery and the both opened and closed. At that point the warning lite did not go on for about half a year. last year the lite went back on, and my friend said buy a charcoal canister and I will put it in, so he did, the lite went back on the next day.

So if any one could guide me in the right direction, that would be great, Thank you

Are you the type of person that keeps pumping gas after it clicks off? Because that will fill the charcoal canister with gas and wreck the system

Hi Its possible my wife drives the car 90 percent of the time and she goes to full service to get someone to pump the gas, is there a gas tank vent that you access by removing the rear seat or did I watch the wrong you tube video, thanks for your reply Colin

Yeah full serve tops it off to make a nice round number. If possible tell her to stop using full serve, or tell the pump jockey to not top it off.
if you lift up the rear seat there should be an access panel for the fuel pump. The charcoal canister is accessed from underneath the car near the spare tire. Unless they've changed things around, my experience is with the older ones

Is it hard to start the engine after filling-up the gas tank (at gas stations)?
