I think my throwout bearing is going bad
I only have thirty thousand miles on the car, but when I first got it I did a lot of burn outs, feathering the clutch like a real jerk #FF. In first and second I get a rattling sound at low rpms. My friend thought it was peices of gears, but I have only grinded my gears a couple of times. They were mostly just little "touch grinds" while I was trying to think real hard because someone asked me a question or when I was really really high. Only once have I done it where it makes a "real" grinding sound, and in my first civic I made it really grind more than a couple of times, never getting this sound. Also, it sounds like it rattles faster as rpm increases, and eventually goes away, so I think it is bearing related. It does not happen all of the time only and only at low rpms in 1st or 2nd.

usually a bad throwout bearing can be heard right at the point of clutch disengagement. With the clutch in neutral, slowly push on the clutch pedal and right when you start feeling resistance if you start hearing a noise then its the throwout bearing.
When during shifting does the noises take place?

i think mines going out too..
tell me if you have the same thing goin on...
- sounds like a rattle - almost like something is hitting the fan blade as its turning
- pushing in the clutch gets rid of the rattle
- when its rattling...does it rattle worse when you turn the A/C on?
mine has been like this for quite some time - what happens if you just let it go?
i went to a shop and asked for a quote to fix it - but the owner had his wife (recpt) talk to me about it - she quoted me 500 but im not sure she knew what i was talking about (considering i was asking her what was wrong lol)
edit: oh yeah - mine only happens at idle i don't think its there when the car is moving

It does not happen all the times, in fact I just went out and it took like 5 starts to get it to make the noise. It makes the noise when i give it gas with the cluth in, but only at low rpms. It also makes the noise at some points with the clutch out while moving in first or second, at really low rpms, and it will go away if I put the clutch in or I give it more gas. On occasion it will be louder and more noticeable, but I could not get it to make the noise during the 10-15mins I was messing around.
It does not make any noise at all when I am in neutral, and push the clutch in, I have to give it gas in gear.
I did not remember to turn the a/c on to see if it makes it louder, will have to try it later.

I had the same problem honda said it was that or a clutch disc, voided my warranty so I did the clutch, flywheel, and throwout bearing and still had noise. Anyway then third and fifth went(piece of sh*t tranny) so I swapped an 02 ex tranny into my 01 ex. I was going to build the motor and turbo it but know I think Because of all the tranny problems with the 7th gen(01-02 usually) I'm gonna do an rsx type s swap come springtime. I might even keep the d17a2 motor to throw into a hatch or something down the line. I hope for your sake its a throw out bearing or You might wanna start saving for a tranny fix or swap.
Besides your Throwout, the most likely thing I would say it is could be a needle bearing on the Countershaft/Input Shaft (whatever you call it).
I have the same problem with my 01' LX which has 104,000 mi. I took mine in for disgnostics today and the owner of the shop drove it around with me inside. Doing tight circles in the parking (1st gear, low RPM) makes it very noticible.
-It sounds like something hitting a fan, gets quite when there is no load on trans/eng, gets louder with more load. Goes away when clutch is pressed.
-Sometimes when starting from a stop the sound is not audiable until I'm near the point of shifting to 2nd, then it abruptly starts.
-Noise in Rev, 1st, 2nd, 3rd and very faint in 5th. No noise in 4th (he said this is because 4th goes straight through or something)
Quoted that it needs new Tranny Bearings and a rear "Mount?". This "mount" causes some excess "play" or jerky car when giving sudden gas or quickly releasing clutch.
Thats just my $0.02

Yeah sound like a throwout bearing in almost all cases except for UTAHBMXER...you might have a driveshaft issue. Its probably gonna run you around 400-500 bux for the fix due to the excessive amounts of labor......if you can get it any cheaper dont forget to thank the mechanic for not ****ing you big time. I dont suggest doing this yourself unless you have help or a tranny jack and are pretty good under the hood. Its pretty involved!

The noise is only audible in 1st and second at low rpms, and has nothing to do with the clutch being in, it still makes the noise with the clutch in. It happens at random, but usually right after I start the car, and when it is really cold outside. I have been trying to find out about this damn sound for months, but it happens so randomly I am having trouble.
I am going to change the tran fluid, cause I am hoping it is only metal off the gears getting into the bearings. When I was learning reverse 180s I grinded the gears a couple times really really bad. I might refill it, drivine it around, drain it and refill it, cause the oils is real cheap. Just to make sure I flush as much out as possible. Then if it still makes the sound I am going to upgrade the clutch, which will come with a new bearing, and rebuild the tranny with my mechanic buddy.
I still think I am getting early symptons of a bad throw out bearing though. AHHH, oh well at least I learned alot, like not feathering a clutch to do burn outs!

Even with out my buddy's help I have read the DYI and am confident I could do it myself. I know it is not easy ESPECIALLY the first time, but if you put your mind to it you can accomplish damn near anything.

Well its the fact that the tranny is a bitch to re-position onto the block by yourself because it has to go on perfect and you cant force it.......hopefully yours wont do what mine did and fall off the jack and spin 180 degrees.....luckily Im a beast and benched pressed the tranny back in position
Took my car into the shop today. Just got word on everything that was wrong and is being replaced. Wow, expensive repair for my budget.
-Labor
-Bearings and Seal kit for Trans.
-Engine Seal (not sure if he meant crank shaft seal)
-Engine Mount +next day ship cause no local avail. (I guess one was completly gone, which is why my car shakes badly when going from coast to lots of gas)
-New clutch kit
-Machined Flywheel
All for a grand total roughly around $1,250 +tax. Guess I'll have to wait a bit to do my Timing belt and Water Pump. Son a.....

Eh, the work is already done. They are just waiting for the engine mount which will show up tomorrow. I thought about buying a used one but I plan on keeping the car so I just got mine rebuilt so I can have a warranty and I had them put a little nicer clutch in it.
Thanks for the link, I'll have to keep it in mind for other projects.
