Oil Pump O-Ring - short cut?

I've just completed the head gasket job with many, many, MANY, new parts and gaskets - because I was basically there. However, I didn't pull the oil pan and pump for the o-ring.... Now all the signs from other posts that it is leaking...drip, drip. Oh well, I know the terrain now but it got me thinking of a short cut:
  1. Unbold and move PS pump and belt
  2. Loosen alternator and remove belt - leave alternator in
  3. Remove valve cover and upper timing cover
  4. Soft clamp or zip-tie timing belt to cam pulley
  5. Remove crank bolt/pulley/lower timing cover
  6. Mark TB spot on belt and lower TB gear
  7. Un-tension tensioner with 6mm and slide TB gear off.
  8. All steps to remove pan and unbolt oil pump and lift TB out of the way.
  9. Replace it all.
Basically I'm thinking I can skip the motor mounts and keep the belt in it's exact spot using my marks. Marking worked when I did my big job.

Thoughts??

What I did was cut the timing belt off (my belt had about 70K miles on it anyway so I changed it.) . That way I did not have to unbolt the motor mount.

Mine has 200 miles on it - basically brand new. I replaced nearly everything in my repair but didn't go this one last mile... regretting it.

Your thinking seems logical to me. As long as the cam and crank are in time.....

  • Soft clamp or zip-tie timing belt to cam pulley
  • Mark TB spot on belt and lower TB gear
  • Un-tension tensioner with 6mm and slide TB gear off.
I use a hook tool to lift the spring off of its mounting peg so the tensioner pulley relaxes and the timing belt slides right off.

Timing marks are already on the engine...
I would not need to zip tie the belt to a pulley, nor make more marks.

Also remember don’t need to actual take valve cover off, loosen the bolts and just lift up the right side enough to slide cover out.

Use white out to mark the belt/cam and belt/crank points to help make sure it goes back right.
