Theoretical Catalytic Converter Work

02 civic ex, d17a2 enigne, 300,000 miles. I've had the 420 code for about 4 years, guessing the cat is bad. I would never run without a cat, but, if I did.......

If you clean out a cat, will it make the 420 code go away? Will it mess with the O2 sensors and cause a code there? I have worked through a couple of other codes, and would love to see the engine light off before I die.

If you think a good mechanic is expensive, try hiring a bad one

Just what are you thinking of?

Re: Theoretical Catalytic Converter Work

what if you scrape out the inside? Does a $150 walker generic replacement work ok? This is the cat that has the attached header. The generic replacement would require cutting the pipe. Will recycle companies buy one that is cut? Willing to put a little money in this but stock replacement is $1,000.

"Gutting" the cat can't fix the code.

It's cheap for a reason.

Factory part is expensive for a reason.

Cheapo cat may or may not last.
The computer is quite finicky, discount cats usually can't keep it happy for very long.
Hit and miss, I've seen it go both ways.
Warranty normally only covers the part, not installation--- so think about that.

The next step up from Generic would be a cat that is California Certified, should come with a much better warranty and will be a bit more expensive.

This is the cat that has the attached header. The generic replacement would require cutting the pipe.
Any exhaust shop can weld that replacement in. Standard practice IMO.

Will recycle companies buy one that is cut?
I can't answer that.

Do you have to pass an emissions test? (I guess not if you've had the code for 4 years)
Are you a tree hugger?

How much longer will you keep the car? How many miles?
How long does the new cat need to last?
Does the engine run bad?
Does it consume oil?

I hate to even think about posting this..... I'm gonna go hug a tree now.

This is against all federal emissions tampering laws. Do not ever do this. You will pollute! The Cubs won't win the world series! Your babies will be born naked!
