My exhaust is farting!
Starting about two weeks ago my exhaust is making a very strange noise. It sounds just fine until about 3.5-4k rpm when it starts to make a poping or farting noise. This noise only gets louder and more frequent the higher the rpm. It never used to sound like this, and the only change I can think of is that we've had much colder weather than usual. Any ideas of what might be causing my exhaust to sound so crappy would be greatly appreciated. The only mods on the car are an Injen CAI, DC headers, and a thermal r&d cat-back.

Might be a hole. But with a hole, it should be really loud the whole time your accelerating. Happened to my friends 240, thing was so loud and farty.
if you have a fart can, its going to sound like a fart, especially if the resonator has failed, or if the exhaust is fresh, it could be breaking in. does it have that typical ricer sound from the like 12 inch exhaust tip that you see on wannabe ricers??
ok ill look for holes! And no its NOT a fart can! I hate fart cans! And until the past week or so it didnt sound like that, It used to have a really nice, deep but not to loud sound to it. Also You can still hear the nice low growl but now the farting sound is drowning it out mostly.
i have the same problem i have injen cold air intake and greddy catback.... it started to sound farty after i changed my spark plugs and i put on ngk iridium spark plugs.... it just doesn't sound the same as before i put on the ngk's..

are the mods new? when i put on my header/downpipe with my cat on already it made like a farting noise at 4k rpm. sounded like badass v-tec but it was just a fart noise. rofl. im running open downpipe right now and it sounds pretty mean and i get a lot of backfire lol.
ok well no hole as far as I could see, but the sound was definatly comming from the connection between the resonator/mid pipe, and the axel back/muffler. I'm going to take my car to my friends garage and see if I can tighten the connection or something.
for two years i had to deal with a shitcan sounding car. when i first bought my civic when i was 16 i thought it would be badass to saw off my muffler, which led to a series of problems, which led to me getting rid of my resonator and so on. now im 18, and it was getting to be an embarrasment to even drive to work. just ordered the stock exhaust, installed, $190 (good thing to have a mechanic in the family!). car is quiet as hell, with a nice tone from the intake i have. i couldnt be happier. to sum up everything, it is almost useless to do anything to your exhaust on our em2's, there is little if any gain, and the only thing that is worth doing if you want to attempt to make a civic fast is to boost, which hopefully i'll be doing next year. coming up next is a new set of rims, coilover suspension with about a 2" drop, and just try to keep it a clean, nice looking car.
To check for exhaust leaks, start your car (from cold) and hold your hand over your exhaust tip. This will seal your exhaust system. If you're strong enough, and you have a good enough seal, you'll be able to kill the engine because of the pressure being built up. If there is a leak, it will become VERY apparent because it will be the only place for exhaust gases to exit.
