Stuck alternator bushing
Hi everyone,
I'm trying to replace the alternator in my 2004 Civic, but I can't get the new one to fit. There's a bushing on the alternator mount that seems to be sticking out too far (image attached).
I can't get the bushing to budge. I've sprayed it with PB penetrating catalyst several times and let it sit for a while. I tried using a 4-ton hydraulic ram with a spreader wedge. I put as much pressure on it as I could using that, and it still didn't move.
Any thoughts on what my options are for getting the new alternator in?

It's a bushing or sleeve and you may need to beat it to make it move. It WILL move.
I use a long prybar and big hammer to pound on the alt frame right at the sleeve before taking it out of the bracket. One whack is usually all it takes. Some will move the sleeve just by prying the alt side to side a little.
You could insert the old alternator in the bracket again and try that.
You could beat the sleeve with a long drift and hammer if you can get a good angle on it.
Don't forget to tighten all the bolts when you reassemble.....people burn up PCMs when they forget.

Ya that is normal, I don't move that fitting. It is very tight but if you line up the alternator like it is while it is installed then tap on it with a hammer it will slide back in. Then rock it up and down to get it to drop lower/move outward. If it moves too far in towards the engine, use a pry bar to slide it back towards the radiator.
You may need to hammer the sliding bearing on the alternator it self which holds the upper bolt, depending on alternator design (some have a bearing, others are just a hole drilled through the alternator case).

Thanks everyone for your help. I was able to get it to move by putting the old alternator back in and hitting it with a dead blow hammer. It took a while, but it eventually moved.
