Advice on 2001 Civic purchase
Hi there. First time poster, long time reader. I just wanted to get eveyone's option on a Civic a friend of mine is selling. I just want to know if it is a good buy for the Edmonton area. It's my first time buying a car that isn't 500K from the auto graveyard, and I'm a little nervouse about getting burnt.
It's a 2001 LX Coupe, 2 Door, standard tranny, fully loaded, 14,000 km. He's asking $17,500 cash. Good buy? Yes or no.
I've been looking around for competitive prices and the average dealer cost (including GST) is about $19,500. So it seem good....
Also, I've never gotten a car loan before (actually don't know anything about finance :frown so can anyone suggest a good bank, or advice (what is a good interest rate, etc....)
Thanks.

It's not a particularily bad deal is it? sounds good to me at least. to buy a brand new one you have to tack on GST and such. which on a LX worth 18k before tax and dest comes out to well over 20.
I remember a few months ago. Millwoods honda had a bunch of DX's with 50k on them, and was selling them each for 19,500.

Not according to the dealers I talked to. They were asking OVER 19,000 for used with more KM then the one I'm looking at. Where can I get a new one at that price?
I wouldn't say its a particularly good deal. My DX, brand new, was 16,800.....18,500 after taxes.....and it is an auto. Options tend to factor less into the cars worth as it gets older. The car is almost 2 years old.....it doesn't have many kilometers, but still. I think 16,500 would be a nice fair price for a 2k1 LX.

Ok, I'm assuming that all of these prices you are throwing at me are Canadian-West prices, right? And that's after GST, other taxes, and undercoating
?
Alright. So now it's starting to sound like not such a great deal. A guy at work picked his up at Millwoods honda and he asked the guy how much I could get a new LX for, and he was quoted $19,345 (before taxes, fees and undercoating ). How does that sound?
I'm going to call the guy today to try to find out the "Final" price.

Deadeye,
I got my 2001 Civic LX 5spd from Yellowhead honda, the final price was $20K even(gst, tire tack, documentation, everything included)! For that, I got it undercoated, a spoiler, and a oil change card. Of course, the mats, full tank of gas and block heater were included. As for $17,500, wouldn't you rather pay another $2500 to have a brand new car? You'll be the only one who drove it? I prefer new and I wouldn't want to buy a used car at all.

Ok, I just talked to the guy and he's trying to get me to spend a few grand more and get an SIR, and he's trying to convince me I should lease. I'd rather not, but he wants me to see what the advantages are. Any thoughts on leasing? Or should I just get the LX?

Deadeye,
Don't lease! I wouldn't want to, I like to own my vehicle! Also, how much would you be saving per monthly payment? What is your limits for km on the car per year if you lease it(I think it's 12000km)? As for the SIR, how much would you spend on it? Like $26K? Why not go for a base model RSX than? It is a couple thousand cheaper and has a more torquie engine.

Yeah, I don't think I'll be leasing. I'm so pissed off right now. I called the guy just to find out the final price of a loaded LX so I could take it to the bank, and all we talked about is leasing! Arh! I didn't even get the cost
. Well, I did find out that with $1000 bucks down, I could get a 48 month (4 year) lease (is that normal?) and pay $280 a month. Then at the end, I can actualy buy the car for $8,869.00.
So lets see, that means that the car is worth (280 X 48) $13,440 + the $8,869.00 buyout = $22,309. Tack on GST = $23,870.63 (not including shipping, tire tax, etc...). Hmm, that's a bit more than I was looking to spend. And comparing it to my buddy's car $23,870 - $17,500 = $6,370. "Hey, why not spend 2 grand more on a car that you know is new?" Boy, that 2 grand sure jumped up a bit. Man, I hate dealers.

Tell the bastard you dont WANT to lease...and if he cant understand that you'll take your business elsewhere. Damn i hate dealers that try to make you do what is best for them. If you can help it, dont lease....it just runs the price up and you'll be forced to take hella comprehensive insurance as well. If you're in edmonton, go to Alberta Honda and talk to Barry Shuchuck, man. He's a pretty straight shooter.

Nah....this guy is decent. He answers any question directly, doesn't pressure you, and his customer service is great. I met this guy, fool....you didn't. My family has a history of dealing with him and we've had no complaints as yet.

Alright. I'll give him a call. But the weird thing is, I sent an e-mail to all the honda dealers in Edmonton asking for prices and I didn't get one response. I got a call on my cell at an inappropriate time, and I asked the guy to e-mail the figures back to me, and he was taken aback "oh, well......yeah, I suppose I could do that." Didn't hear back from the guy. Is it because you can't hassle/harass people into buying a car over e-mail? What gives?
hey! It's me Jamie from work
