Hey guys
My car is already tinted, but I'm looking this up for my friend.
I can't find any laws that state what the legal percentage of tint is. I heard that 20% is the darkest you can go without getting a ticket. Is this true?
What's the limit, or is this one of those vague portions of the law that the cop can use to his/her discretion?
Any links to the OPP/Ottawa Police/RCMP sites would be great, as these would be the people dishing out the tickets.
Thanks

Just bought my car a few weeks ago. And I got it tinted through the dealership. I asked for the darkest you can legally go and I ended up with 35% on the two front and i think it was 20% in the rear windows.

From what I heard... 35% is the legal limit for the fronts, and the backs can be as dark as you want. Something about how the cops have to be able to see the driver. I don't know tho... I went with 35/20, cuz I didn't want to get hassled by any cops, but damn, there are enough cars on the road that have a DARK DARK tint!
legally it's nothing on the front sides..
tho it comes down to the discretion of the cop issuing the ticket..
you could theoretically paint the rear sides and rear black if you wanted, but most people hit it up 20% to allow some light to pass thru lightening the effect of the front sides..(and so they can see thru it of course..)

Section 73(3) of the Highway Traffic Act reads, "no person shall drive on a highway a motor vehicle on which the surface on the windshield
or of any window on the direct left or right of the driver's seat has been coated with any coloured spray or any other coloured or reflective material that substantialy obscures the interior of the motor vehicle when viewed from outside the motor vehicle".
Basicly, you can completely black out the rear window, and rear passenger side windows, but the side windows can't be too dark.
Key word in the act is "substantially". in other words, it can be tinted, but not too much. As to what is too much depends on whether the officer feels that his ability to see inside the vehicle through the windshied or front side windows is impaired due to tint.
There is no such thing as a rating that is acceptable, its the officers descretion.
There are some clever ways to beat the charge in court, but im tired and don't feel like typin my *** off. hope this helps my bro's out there.

That's why I love my metallic (premium) tint so much
I've got it 30% all the way around, and when it's really sunny out, you can't see in, it's as if it's 5% (in terms of being able to see in), since it's so darned reflective
In normal sunny days or cloudy days or at night, it's your regular 30% tint...
Technically you're not supposed to tint your front windshield at all, INCLUDING a windshield banner if you car did not come with one.
The official numbers are 35% max in the front, and anything you want in your rear windows. (including your rear passenger side windows)

Narc: that's what I'm looking for...a propery use of quotation
You da man!!!
I got mine done from the dealer. They offered 35 front/20 rear...but I knew it would look kinda funky with two different tints. So I went with 20/20.
Whenever there's a ride program, I always roll down both front windows so that they can't even harrass me about it
Thanks again guys...good discussion!
