Yeah you should be safe. I know a few people that have been doing that for a few years now and they have never been in an accident. Go for it.

my opinion is that they are ok if you don't have ABS brakes....

if you have ABS brakes, definitely get 4 snowtires....two front tires gripping while rear are slipping might cause fishtail?

if you are only going to get 2 snow tires, put them on the rear wheels (FWD or RWD cars)

fishtailing is the worst thing that can happen in snowy conditions.... and with FWD you can pull yourself in any given direction, but you will have no control over the rear wheels

so.. give the back end more traction and you will make it harder to lose control of the car

EDIT: i should probably say that there is nothing wrong with having them on the front wheels... either way, you're doing yourself a favour with the extra traction

Hey you own a 20k car...why not spend some extra money to be sure to be safe in buying 4 new winter tires? I've ever thought that if a 400$ set of tires can save u an accident ( some extra money $$ ) it is a good investment...!!!

Just sharing my opinion....!!!

The stock tires are rated "no-season" as in they will not grip in any season.

If you could only have 2 snows definitely put them on the rear on a FWD for max. vehicle stability. The traction difference between front and rear is great enough to cause you a spin at inappropriate times. Fun if you anticipate it but could mean $$ or even life if it did so unexpectedly.
Having said that, set of 4 snows is highly recommended.

ABS can inhibit braking control on loose surfaces such as gravel / snow. Under these conditions it is better to have wheel lockup at the final stage of braking so that debris/snow can collect in front of the tire contact patch and increase forward friction more than a rolling tire can provide. This is not to say ABS is bad but to learn threshold braking (in a safe environment). Note ABS beats the best driver on icey surface.

The stockers are FireStone FR690

Yeah, don't cheap out... buy 4 sets of tires.

I bought a 4 Bridgestone winter tires last year for $200, and they grip like CRAZY in the snow. Feels like AWD. Goto the Costco, they have specials as well on Michelins.

You might save that 100 bucks, but spring out the dough. Not only will you have peace of mind, but save yourself from a potential disaster in case of an emergency. If your car ever gets tapped from your blindspot area, your car WILL fishtail, if you only have snow tires in the front. The fronts will grip, while the back end will slide out.

It's rated as all-season.. but I think what he meant was that it sucks in summer AND it sucks in winter...

Which is completely true.
