Easiiest upgrade would be a Cold-Air Intake. You basically have two main brands - AEM and InJen.
Theres a DIY for the AEM. I just installed an InJen CAI and I used this to help me take off all the plasitic crap then used the InJen's instructions for the rest.
You'll notice improvement in sound, throttle response, the engine sounds like it breathing much better and depending on who you talk to, better performance, which I've seen.
The AEM is usually about $20 -$30 more than the InJen. The main difference between the two is the location of the filter.
For AEM, open the hood, and look straigth down behind the rad. Thats where it'll be.
For the InJen, you'll have to visualize this with me. Think of a box starting under the right passenger light, infront of the right wheel well, to the front of your bumper and a foot into your engine. Thats where the filter goes. It protected much better than the AEM from the elements. Draw back i that in order to access the filter to clean it, you either have to take off the bumper again, or just take out a couple of plugs holding the wheel well (really really easy).
I went with the InJen because I might not take off the extension piece to convert it to a short ram intake since its well protected.
CAI should be your first mod, even if you don't know anything about your engine. Theres tons of people here that can help you. Too bad you were in my city I'd do it for ya now that I know what I have to do.
Btw, I never worked on an engine before this...
xian
Edit: CAI between $330 to $370 depending where you buy it. Go to local shop and try to buy "cash" and work your way down.

ENGINE...
get a free flow system...MEANING...
....Intake..(<CAI>COLD AIR) or (<SRI>Short RAM)...To have better flow of air onto the engine
....NEW INTAKE MANIFOLD cause ours are made of PLASTIC... NO ONE makes it yet as far as I know,,, but it'd be nice to have a NON plastic one
....Headers...(DC 4-1) and HP racing I heard has a good one for our cars..
....Exhaust... well you might wanna get a bigger mid-pipe and of course NEW muffler ... for greater air flow out
then Internals... meaning theINSIDE of an engine.....
..... Like Camshafts... or in our case (SOHC) camshaft JUST ONE
..... Stroker ..... New PISTONS and a ported bore so we car run 2.0L or even 2.2L instead of 1.7L
.....PISTON RINGS...amd if your going to go track.... a new BOTTOM OIL PAN to keep a balanced oily engine
and more and more and more
and more and more and more
and more and more and more
and more and more and more
If I'm wrong on anyting PLS correct me...
