Reliable, yes. Coz all the guts are pretty much the same as desktop counterparts. You get factory warranty anyway. Everyone in Taiwan and Asia in general use these brands, not much ppl there can afford US names after export tax and duty, etc.
Even if you get on-site warranty from Dell, if it's a part that's removable, you still have to send it back (so much for on-site), like HDDs and CDRom, etc.

Man that's kind of steep still. In Canada we get hosed for deals, because theres no real competition for Futureshop etc. In the US there's tons of competition, but 99% of the sales etc are in stores I can't buy and ship to Canada.

There isn't much deals in terms of laptops, because they are typically retail products.
Plus the fact that there's never a sub-$1000 (US) notebook in the market.

A laptop is great is don't mind lugging it around and you make sure your battery's always charged, it's a biatch to find an outlet. But of course the new laptops are so light and batteries last longer u prolly wouldn't mind.
However, the lighter a laptop is, the more expensive.
Not sure which school u go to, but some offer wireless network connectivity like bluetooth so as long as you're in the or about the school you'll have access to their network. You'll have to check with the instution about fees and hardware costs/requirements though.
So unless you're the type that doesn't stay home much, it may be become an expensive paperweight.
My experience is usually u can't keep up with the lecture if you're trying to type notes, especially if there are diagrams or illustrations involved. Plus, I've had a few profs who get quite annoyed with people who have their laptops in class, they don't like the keyboard tapping sounds or that ominous glow produced around you when they're trying to teach using an overhead or projector and the lights are turned down.

not even for a basic laptop, i dont mean for them to be my desktop or anything like that!
I lug around a Dell Lattitude C610 as company notebook.... Lemme tell you, it's a friggen brick.
If you're using it for school, you'd have to lug around the AC adapter, most likely the floppy as well as the CDROM (very few notebooks nowadays have the slimline dual floppy/CDROM attachment).... Plus, you'd have to carry it in a separate bag than your knapsack, plus the security cable, plus maybe a network cable....
That's alot of crap just to make life easier.
I remember I was told a friend of a friend bought a Palm pilot, and bought a friggen foldable keyboard and used that to write notes in class.... He looked like an idiot.
Your best bet is to buy one of those truly hi-tech toys....... An ePad of some sort... It'll look like a notepad, but you use a stylus pen (basically anything that looks like a toothpick), and write on it, and it'll convert your scribble to text. That way, if you need to draw diagrams and/or mathematical computations, you don't have to worry.... With a notebook or Palm, you're screwed in those cases....
Although I must say, I really like my Dell
If you're going for a notebook, don't go cheap. It should last you for some time. This one I have has got a CDRW,built-in DVD *I think*, and is just a joy.... I watch VCDs and music videos on the commute home

Good ol pen and paper....yes this coming from an I.T. guy.

I agree. Don't even imagine you'd use the laptop in class, it's not practical. It's really only useful if you plan on say doing reports in the cafe while waiting for the next class.
I went through University just having a home computer (ok, several, constantly upgraded). I go to school with a pen and a clipboard with paper.
