Civic still worth buying?
After going to the vehicle problems section. I am TOTALLY unsure if buying a civic is the right thing.
sure i want to save money on gas, but i also want the car to be reliable and not have problems.
ok.....problems that Honda can actually FIX instead of telling me that "it's fine"
Rattles is not what i like to hear with a new car...and especially engine problems is a no no. ABS lights coming on while driving? That's not a good sign. There's so many problems with the 7th gen civics, they should redesign the whole damn thing.
Of course there's people that doesn't have any problems, but how many are there?
sorry, i'm just kinda frustrated about all these things. First i see the 7th civic coming out and i was excited
now, it seems like it's actually a bad news instead of the usual good news that Honda brings to people.
What's your advice??
Thanks!

Dude, most of the problems you said I never experience once. The people posting on the forums there are just mad cos they got a lemon. Civics are known for Reliability which is why they last for like 100km+. As far as the rattling goes, I think most people experience it in the trunk. That's about it, and there's a DIY to tighten the seals there to remove the noise. I was pretty satisisfied with my civic except for it's handling. Since our Civics use a rear beam axle suspension as opposed to the double wishbone system, it's handling and turning radius is nothing like its predecessor. If you don't know what I mean by this, they changed its back suspension slightly to remove the Bump in the middle in the rear seats for extra comfort, yet you sacrifice handling. The car feels really light and sways a lot when you make turns. Every little bump can be felt by the suspension system, mind you I had not lower my car.
I was really satisfied with the engine. It provided most users the needs for everyday driving for good MPG, and at the same time, it gave the drivers that desire need a little fun with VTEC. It's power when you need it. Overall, for reability of the engine, good resale value, good MPG, and styling (compare to Echo/Focus/Matrix/Any other car in said price range), not a lot of cars beat it. All in all, for the price you're paying, I heard SI's are dirt cheap right now, 2k down, 240 a month, go for it.
I don't know about you, but I see like 40-50 7th Gen Civics a day, Honda must be doing something right?

In all production fields... there isn't such a company that does not deal with defectiveness... they actually use it to their advantage by showing their low ratio of the number... Honda, in general, do have an impressive ratio compared to it's leading competitors... to sum it up... let's just say honda dealer don't have a walt disney complain line up to see everyday...

Like the guy in the ING Direct commerical says--SAVE YOUR MONEY!
Don't buy a Civic. (no flames please, just my opinion)
I'll tell you why.
1. Yes, like somebody said, Honda has a good reliability record. Honda's BAD day, is better than Chrysler's GOOD day. But you know what? After personally talking to 8 different Honda mechanics, and when 7 of them tell you that the new Civics are UNRELIABLE, you know something's up. Of course, this is probably to Honda's standards, but yeah, you never heard 1/2 of the problems with last generation Civics.
2. Competition is furious. The new Corolla rocks. You want QUALITY? Hey, this car has it. Go up to a Civic, make sure no one is looking, then push the body panel in with your knee. It goes in. Then do it to a Corolla. You can tell the sheetmetal is much more rigid. Open and close the doors. Opens more smoothly, and closes with a german car like THUD! No teeny feeling here. Then get behind the wheel and punch it. More usuable power, and faster over all. Transmission? If are you thinking about buying automatic, there is no contest. Corolla is quicker AND smoother. Take in consideration of better gas mileage (52mpg), new crisp styling, better headlamps, and you have yourself a a winner. All backed by legendary Toyota quality & reliability.
3. Higher financing rates. Honda knows people are suckers for Civics--they could get a cardboard box with four wheels on it, slap on a Civic badge, and people will buy it. Extremely powerful brand image. Of course, Honda knows this, so they will charge up the azz interest rates. That coupled with a 3rd party loan company, and you have one of the highest possible financing rates.
I've had my car for just over a year now, with 58,000km on it. My over thoughts on the car? It's good, and bad. Good because I recieve a lot of compliments on the looks. Brakes are excellent, interior room is great and pretty fun to drive overall. Bad points would be way below reliability record (call it a lemon, but it's still unacceptable when dealerships can't fix it), really bad tires (Firestones, nuff said) and very uncomfortable seats (although some people say they are perfect for them--different backs, I guess).
Would I buy one again? Nope. I'm pretty sure this will be my first and last Honda. I guess I am heavily biased towards Toyotas, but hey... been driving them for long time, but all the cars combined ('89 MR-2, '92 Corolla, 97' Corolla, 94' Previa 4WD, '97 4Runner LE, '99 4Runner LE) has not given me this much headache. They say first impressions are everything, and I got the short end of the straw on this one.

01Coupe.
word on that one Brotha!!.. Like I said. Honda's relaibility and build quality went way down hill witht he 7th gen civics.. still not a bad car. But it's nothing quality wise to a toyota or a previous gen honda.
Cheers

I can't say much on the Civic COUPE, but in terms of the Civic sedan, oh man.....
The thing looks just damned TACKY.... tails are nasty, front grille is nasty, the interior fabric and stuff is just....CRAP. I personally prefer the Acura EL looks a bit more, simply because the hood looks more stylish, the grille as well, and the rear tails, well, it's a matter of preference, but I think it looks better than the civic sedan tails.
I agree with the guys here about the cheap feeling doors. Garbage. Ride quality is terrible. The rear hop/sway feels so dangerous... That ramp that takes you from the DVP to Hwy 401 East, if you stay on the right lane, there's a bump. Once you hit it going 65km/h+, your back end of going off the ground. As it's in the air, it starts swaying to the left, and when you land....oh damn, you have to CORRECT it by countersteering. CHEAP.
My shocks? Both front are blown. My car is stock. I've only had my car for 1 year.
My gf's family just bought the Sentra SE-R. good deal? Same deals as a Honda Civic. Only thing I didn't like about the SE-R (relative to the Civic) is that no ABS standard (available as a $2300 option, complete with moonroof, etc.), and the back seats have zero leg room. (You can thank the Civic for giving us terrible suspension, but more legroom here.) Very peppy 165hp engine (same engine as the Altima!), KILLER suspension, and you've got a winner. The panels inside feel so cheap and plastic-ish, but hell, the rubber-like seat fabric is very stylish compared to the fabric seats of the Civic (only to be beaten by my leather seats
), and the doors give you that nice thud.
And don't even talk about the suspension.... I never noticed it myself, but after my gf began complaining about how dangerous it felt in the car, I began to notice my car floats on air.... The car rocks like crazy when you turn, bouncy as hell (could be my blown front shocks, which I'm still DAMN waiting for replacements for over 3 months!), and just has a terrible ride.....

Furball and 01Coupe, I couldn't agree more! The points you guys said about how the rear end feels like it's lifting off I can personally experience with. That was one of the reasons why my car got totalled. Every time you make a turn, you feel the car getting light. As you know, our car has really bad turning radius due to it's structure and size. So when you jerk the wheel to the left or something, the end easily goes the other way, resulting you to counter steer. Ever take the car past 100 km/h? The car sways left and right like crazy......I didn't dare going top speed because the car feels so unsafe, like it will throw itself off the road any second. Every single bump I go on, I feel it BAD.
With the money I got from the write off, I purchased a new Corolla. Man, what a difference in the ride quality! It's comfortable, I can barely feel any bumps. This could be related to how HIGH the car is! The threads on the uniroyals are uncomparable with the Firestones. The doors as 01 coupe stated, slam with a German like thud. You know the car is sturdy. Wanna know how my car looks like after I totalled it? The door is cheap as it can be. The sheetmetal dented in so easily. However, I do know that this generation civic is definately more sturdier than the 6th gen.
It's all up to preference in the end. Did I regret buying my Civic? Well not really, being Asian, we have this inate love for Civics lol. It is obvious the styling of the Corolla is nothing as slick and pretty as the Civic. You gotta ask yourself this question. How much do you want to spend? What car can you get in that price range? Your choices is somewhat limited to Focus, Protege, Civic, Corolla. The non-vtech civics are slowwwwww............so slowww.......don't buy this car expecting the mods you could do with the B16's and B18's. An intake/exhaust/headers give this car 5HP! An intake on a RSX gives 8 HP! Lol

<< the way you guys are going on makes me wanna sell my car >>
I'm dying to sell mine!
But I'm in no budget to do so... going to have to drive it for another 2 years at least.
Next car on the list at that time?
Not in any partiular order...
If I am buying new:
1. VW Jetta 1.8T Tiptronic (180HP, 5-Speed Auto, Good Looks, Reduced Price, Questionable Reliabilty)
2. Toyota Matrix XRS (180HP, 6-Speed Stick, Good Utility, Race Car Handling)
3. Toyota MR-2 Spyder (Ultimate go-kart, faster thru salaom than Vette Z06, but need a winter beater)
If I am buying used:
1. Acura 3.2 TL Type-S (260HP, 17" Rims, HID, luxerious, reliable)
2. Subaru Impreza WRX (Rally Power, Easy To Mod, Good Luck Finding One Unabused)
3. Something German (BMW 3-Series, Audi A4, Mercedes C-Class)
Or who knows... I might ride this out if financial situtation doesn't look good! But I really DO want to get rid of it before my transmission goes. It's already starting to slip...
I am a proud owner of a 1.7.
First off, I am totally with you on the Toyota favortitism- i love'em to pieces cause my dad loves them and cause they're great cars (we've had a 4Runner and a Sienna).
About the bounciness- Everyone's had their shot at the bounciness, and I agree on this one: too much bounce- but I can live with it. Pushing 160km/hr, IMO, I feel solid, but then again, a large bump would've change my opinion in a flash. (BTW, i've topped off my 1.7 at around 160-165!! Good $hi*, felt like it had more to give too!)
Secondly, the key reason why I got a sedan was cause of the pesky little issue called insurance. I was stuck between the indigo-blueish Celica and the 1.7: if it weren't for insurance; but nonetheless, no regrets.
Yeah, lemons will be lemons. Nothing anyone can truly do about them but, alas, rant and vent- luckily i've been blessed with a squeaky clean one (knock on wood).
When it comes down to it, we gotta remember that our model(s) are pretty much the guinea pigs for the rest of the upcoming 7th gen vics. My ride's a 2k1 and already the 2k2 has come with neat adjustments.
My two cents-
Peace! Goodluck with the Corollie - make it run 13's!!

This is a great thread, you guys are right on the ball with your complaints. WTF is up with the back end of the car skipping off the ground like that! Goddamn it some day I swear it is going to cause a crash. I really want to test drive some other cars out there, before i throw alot of money into this car. Plus, when I bought it, they were new and nobody had one yet, but now they are everywhere, and I would really like to have something unique. An FASTER! I just would be mad at myself for not keeping the car for longer. We'll see what happens.
just throw some subs in the trunk, lower it, and put sweet rims on it and you won't have that problem anymore......or with the money you spent on the items listed above, save it and put it towards a car that doesn't bounce...
